Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' planned sequel, Shrunk, has received an unfortunate update from one of the film's stars, Josh Gad. Released in 1989, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a comedic film featuring Rick Moranis as Wayne Szalinski, an inventor whose shrink ray accidentally miniaturizes neighborhood children. The movie is considered a beloved family comedy, and a sequel titled Shrunk was announced for Disney+ in 2019.
However, Josh Gad recently shared disappointing news that the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel is currently not being produced.
Is Disney Still Planning To Produce Shrunk?
: Despite several delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, scheduling conflicts, and budgetary challenges, Gad expresses optimism for the eventual release of Shrunk on Disney+ in the foreseeable future.
Given the numerous delays Shrunk has faced, one can't help but wonder if Disney will ever produce and release the planned sequel. Shrunk would mark the return of Joe Johnston, the original director of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, to helm the new installment. Although Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was Johnston's directorial debut, he has since directed notable films such as Jumanji, Jurassic Park III, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Shrunk would serve as a testament to Johnston's tremendous growth and progress since his first foray into filmmaking.
If Shrunk gets made, Moranis will make his return to acting in film. Although he has appeared in two sequels to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, titled Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, Moranis' last movie role was as Rutt the Canadian moose in Brother Bear 2 in 2006. However, Moranis is set to reprise his role as Wayne in Shrunk if the film goes into production.
Considering the success of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as a beloved family comedy, it would be logical for Disney to continue the production of Shrunk in the future. However, with multiple delays over the past few years, it is uncertain when Johnston, Moranis, and Gad's new addition to the franchise will be produced, if at all. Despite being announced a long time ago, it appears that Shrunk may not ultimately be released on Disney+.
