While the Grand Theft Auto franchise often receives the majority of praise and attention, Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption series deserves equal recognition with two of the most highly-acclaimed video games ever made. Released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption was an instant hit both critically and commercially, offering Rockstar's best gameplay at the time within a uniquely captivating setting. Despite the eight-year wait for the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2 surpassed its predecessor in nearly every aspect, making the anticipation well worth it.
In recent times, there have been several online rumors suggesting the development of a Red Dead Redemption remake or remaster. Just a few weeks ago, the South Korean rating board listed a new game simply titled Red Dead Redemption, fueling speculation about a potential remaster or remake. This leak was further substantiated by industry veteran Colin Moriarty, who confirmed that a Red Dead remake announcement was imminent. While this news is undoubtedly exciting for fans, it is important to note that a Red Dead Redemption remake would not compare to the excellence achieved in Red Dead Redemption 2.
A Red Dead Redemption Remake Might Not Hold a Candle to Red Dead Redemption 2
The original Red Dead Redemption was highly acclaimed during its release, standing out among other notable games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Its distinct Wild West setting, captivating storyline, memorable characters, and enjoyable gameplay made it a resounding success. However, since its debut in 2010, Rockstar Games has progressed significantly in their game design.
Rockstar consistently incorporates significant changes in each new release, based on the feedback received from their previous games. For example, after the mixed response to Red Dead Redemption's online component, Rockstar ensured that Grand Theft Auto 5 offered a fully comprehensive online experience, resulting in the tremendous and enduring success of GTA Online over the past decade. With an eight-year gap between the original Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, it is only natural that Red Dead Redemption 2 surpasses its predecessor in every aspect.
While some fans may still have a preference for the original Red Dead over its sequel, it is indisputable that Red Dead Redemption 2 boasts superior game mechanics and systems. The sequel offers more captivating side quests, a more realistic and expansive open-world, improved gunplay and horse riding, increased customization options, fully developed characters, and a complex and captivating story that exudes Spaghetti Western charm. In simple terms, Red Dead Redemption 2 is regarded as one of the greatest games ever created, and while there may be strong nostalgia surrounding a Red Dead Redemption remake, it is unlikely to surpass the excellence of its sequel.
The only way that a revamped version of Red Dead Redemption could potentially measure up to Red Dead 2 is if it were entirely reconstructed using the Red Dead 2 engine. However, even in this scenario, its open world and quest design would likely be less enthralling. Considering Rockstar is a busy studio, with most resources currently focused on Grand Theft Auto 6, the likelihood of a fully fledged Red Dead Redemption remake seems slim. A remaster seems more plausible, in which case, the sequel will undoubtedly remain the superior game.
Red Dead Redemption is available now on PS3 and Xbox 360.
