Five Nights at Freddy's creator, Scott Cawthon, has settled a fan debate concerning the character Bonnie. This terrifying bunny is one of the four primary animatronics in the game that players must protect themselves from.
Released in 2014, Five Nights at Freddy's quickly gained popularity among horror game enthusiasts. Players assume the role of a security guard tasked with surviving five nights at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Failing to quickly close doors or running out of electricity results in being startled by one of the animatronics. The game's reach expanded further when popular YouTubers such as Markiplier and PewDiePie uploaded Let's Play videos, showcasing their comical reactions to the jump scares. The franchise has since grown to include 13 games, along with spinoffs, book series, and a live-action movie featuring Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard.
Since the release of the first teaser for the Five Nights at Freddy's film, fans have noticed that Bonnie appeared to be blue, deviating from their usual purple hue in the games. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, lead designer Robert Bennett revealed that he initially made Bonnie purple in the movie, following the character's merchandise. However, Cawthon clarified that Bonnie was actually blue and only appeared purple due to the lighting in the first game. This revelation surprised many long-time fans, while others were relieved that Cawthon had finally settled the debates surrounding the character. To further accentuate Bonnie's blue color, Reddit user CrownedVanguard shared different versions of the character from various Five Nights games.
According to Bennett, the source of the confusion regarding Bonnie's color could possibly be attributed to the numerous merchandise pieces portraying them as purple. Considering that the first game is nearly ten years old and the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise is known for its intricate backstory, it may come as a surprise to discover that Bonnie's presumed purple hue had been inaccurately depicted.
However, it is worth noting that Bonnie and other bunny animatronics, which drew inspiration from them, did feature a more bluish tint compared to their original design. This includes the enigmatic Glamrock Bonnie from Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, who exhibited a light blue complexion.
Five Nights at Freddy's premieres in theaters and on Peacock on October 27.
