In recent seasons, Cobra Kai has faced difficulty in establishing a clear hero character. However, this issue can be resolved in season 6. Taking place 33 years after the Karate Kid movie series, Cobra Kai incorporates old rivalries and conflicts from its predecessor, creating a fresh narrative centered on personal growth and coming-of-age. This approach has proven to be highly effective, as it not only appeals to fans of the Karate Kid franchise but also captivates a new generation of viewers. Throughout its five seasons, Cobra Kai has successfully utilized this storytelling formula, introducing captivating twists and turns.
Season 6 of Cobra Kai is expected to follow a similar trajectory as its preceding seasons. As the final season of the show, it will bring resolution to all ongoing character storylines. However, before reaching its conclusion, significant changes must be made to certain character arcs, particularly those revolving around Miguel. Despite Miguel having a compelling storyline in Cobra Kai, his character development and arc have not been consistent since season 3.
Cobra Kai Forgot About Miguel After Season 3
In season 1 of Cobra Kai, Miguel emerged as the true embodiment of the "Karate Kid" in the franchise. Initially a bullied student, he took a turn in his life by joining a dojo. While the show also explored other storylines, such as the rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, Miguel remained the central figure of Cobra Kai. His actions greatly influenced the overall narrative of the show in its early seasons. However, everything changed after he sustained a serious spine injury in season 2. Despite not being able to claim that Cobra Kai diminished Miguel's importance in subsequent seasons, the show gradually shifted focus away from him.
Unlike other main characters in Cobra Kai, Miguel's journey has been relatively straightforward. While others have experienced both momentous triumphs and devastating defeats that shaped their characters, Miguel has never officially lost a fight. Although season 4 hinted at new developments for Miguel through his Mexico storyline, season 5 predominantly centered around the father-son relationship between Robby and Johnny. This further solidified the notion that Cobra Kai has indeed marginalized Miguel after season 3.
Miguel Needs To Lose In Cobra Kai Season 6
Miguel's storyline in Cobra Kai has become predictable due to his lack of losses. However, to make his character more relevant, Cobra Kai season 6 can introduce new challenges and setbacks in his karate journey. The most effective way to do this would be to have him lose a fight early on in season 6. This loss, against a formidable villain, would not only address the issue of weak villains but also provide an opportunity for Miguel's growth.
Similar to Hawk's transformation in Cobra Kai season 5 when Kenny defeats him, Miguel's loss in season 6 could serve as a catalyst for him to overcome his weaknesses as a fighter and return even stronger. Moreover, this defeat would once again make him an underdog in season 6, enabling him to seek guidance from Sensei Lawrence and LaRusso, as well as learn from his peers who have experienced both victories and defeats.
Miguel's Redemption Can Make Him Cobra Kai's Main Character Again
Starting as a regular high-school student in season 1, Miguel experienced an exciting transformation when he became the Valley's top fighter after winning the All-Valley tournament. However, unlike the other main characters of Cobra Kai, Miguel's storyline gradually became stagnant after reaching his peak in season 1. To rejuvenate his character arc, Cobra Kai can ignite a cathartic journey for Miguel by delivering a painful loss in season 6, where he will start from the bottom and ultimately rise to the top.
This redemption storyline could propel Miguel back to the forefront as Cobra Kai's main character. With all the conflicts and rivalries between the primary characters resolved in season 5, it would be redundant to have Miguel lose against Robby or any other recurring Cobra Kai characters. Therefore, the setup in season 6 of Cobra Kai presents the perfect opportunity to introduce a new rival for Miguel in the international Sekai Taikai tournament. This new opponent would initially dethrone Miguel from his undefeated position but ultimately face the consequences of underestimating the determined underdog.
