In the vast Star Wars universe, both the Sith and the Jedi have demonstrated an array of extraordinary force abilities. While some of these powers are recognized as part of the Legends canon, there are still numerous astonishing abilities that are considered canon, with new ones being added over time. Star Wars enthusiasts can never predict when their preferred abilities will be incorporated into canon, but the possibility might be closer than they anticipate.
Through force abilities, skilled Jedi and Sith can achieve remarkable feats. Regardless of their intentions with the mystical energy, those connected to the Force possess the potential to either completely annihilate someone or rescue them from the clutches of death.
What Is The Force?
The Force, regardless of personal preferences, is a mystical concept that serves as a cosmic energy connecting all aspects of the universe. It exists in varying degrees within all living beings, but only a select few possess the true ability to sense and utilize its power, often leading to the development of formidable Jedi or Sith. An essential element in harnessing the Force is the presence of Midi-Chlorians, which, when concentrated within an individual's body, heighten their sensitivity to the Force.
Throughout history, the Force has been referred to by different names and has played a significant role in various civilizations. However, differing interpretations of the Force eventually caused a division between those fiercely devoted to its essence. The factions that emerged from this division were known as the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi embody goodness and utilize the Force to aid others, while the Sith view the Force as a means to gain personal power and dominance.
What Are Jedi Force Abilities?
Both types of Force schools possess a range of Force abilities that can be employed. A frequently observed one in the Star Wars films involves a basic form of telekinesis. In addition, Force users commonly exhibit skills such as object stasis, vision capabilities, and the faculty to perceive the intentions of others. Those with a strong connection to the Force can even detect disturbances within it.
Various Jedi abilities exist that are widely utilized for benevolent purposes. In The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker employed the Force to create the illusion of his presence on a distant planet within the galaxy. Like several other immensely skilled Jedi, he possessed the capability to transform into a Force spirit, essentially granting him eternal existence. This power has grown even more formidable in the sequel trilogy, as it was demonstrated that a Force spirit could directly interact with specific objects, despite lacking a physical manifestation.
Many of the unique Force abilities possessed by Jedi focus on their philosophy of assisting others. One beloved Jedi, Cal Kestis, possesses the remarkable Psychometry Force ability, allowing him to perceive the history of a specific location or significant item. Certain Jedi form deep bonds with animals, enabling them to eventually domesticate and influence these creatures. Some Jedi possess the power of healing, as showcased by Ben Solo in The Rise Of Skywalker, where he even resurrects someone.
Whether interpreted as a bestowed gift from the Force or developed as a direct response to the Sith's dark-side abilities, certain Jedi exhibit the capability to block or counter Sith Force powers. Yoda, one of the most formidable Jedi who has ever lived, is among the few to demonstrate the direct ability to counter the lethal Force Lightning ability. This was witnessed in both Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith, when Yoda faced Count Dooku and Darth Sidious, respectively.
What Are Sith Force Abilities?
While the Dark Side of the Force is renowned for its formidable strength, their command over its energy in canonical sources falls short. The commonly witnessed abilities include Force Lightning, Force Choke, and manipulation of the Force in general. Apart from these, the Sith's most potent capabilities are merely legendary tales of supposed achievements by powerful Sith.
Darth Plagueis was rumored to possess the ability to prevent death and even create life, but such a feat has yet to be overtly demonstrated by any Sith. Therefore, among the Sith's arsenal of abilities, Force Lightning stands as one of the most powerful, precisely because its usage carries a high risk of self-inflicted harm. While the Sith wield incredible power, many of their showcased skills overlap with those of the Jedi, albeit with a darker twist.
Are Light Abilities Stronger Than Dark Abilities?
The argument could be made that in the Legends canon, the Sith are the superior force users. However, it is apparent that the potential of the light side of the Force far surpasses that of the dark side. One significant reason for this is the absence of a Sith capable of achieving immortality as a Force Spirit. While the dark side holds great power, a Jedi of equal strength will always possess valuable abilities to counter the Sith.
Given the established canonicity of abilities such as Psychometry and Force Healing, even to the extent of resurrecting the deceased, along with the Force Spirit's capacity to interact with the world, it seems that Jedi with a genuine connection to the Force are the more formidable beings. Simultaneously, it is true to acknowledge that the Sith wield the strongest combat technique in the form of Force Lightning, despite the potential to deflect the attack with a lightsaber and, more impressively, solely through the Force.
