Origins of Devil Slayer Magic

Originally, it was believed that Dragon Slayers could only learn their magic directly from dragons. Similarly, Devil Slayer Magic was thought to be exclusive to demons who could impart it to humans. However, it is now known that wizards can also acquire Devil Slayer Magic through the Books of Zeref. Yet, this method is highly challenging as it requires merging regular magic with harmful particles known as Anti-Ethernano Particles. These particles, also referred to as Magic Barrier Particles, are highly toxic to humans. Consequently, the primary way to learn Devil Slayer Magic remains obtaining the power from a demon. Humans can receive this power from demons created by the Books of Zeref or from Etherious creatures.

Properties of Devil Slayer Magic

Devil Slayer Magic is specifically designed for the purpose of slaying and exorcising demonic beings. While regular magic can also eliminate demons, Devil Slayer users possess Anti-Ethernano Particles within their magic, making it easier for them to eliminate any demonic creatures. Exorcising demons involves channeling one's magic power towards the creature, which differs slightly from using other types of magic to kill them.

Similar to other Slayer magics, Devil Slayer Magic bestows certain properties upon its users, such as immunity to their respective element and the ability to recharge their magic by consuming their primary element. However, they cannot replenish energy by consuming elements they have generated themselves. Additionally, Devil Slayer Magic allows the user to gain information about a specific demon simply by observing it, including details about the type of magic or Curse used by the demon.

The Process of Demonization

Using excessive Devil Slayer Magic has a grave drawback: it can transform the user into a demon, a process known as Demonization. This state is characterized by black markings covering half of the user's body. However, being in this demon state grants the user immunity to Curses and other forms of demonic magic, including the powerful Memento Mori curse that can annihilate anything it touches.

The demon state is not necessarily negative for those who have mastered Demon Slayer Magic. They can willingly transform into a demonic state, gaining enhanced strength and endurance. However, there is a risk of losing one's sanity when learning Devil Slayer Magic too quickly. This can result in the user making irrational decisions that can harm themselves and those around them.

Users of Devil Slayer Magic

Compared to Dragon Slayers, Devil Slayers in the Fairy Tail series have more limitations, particularly because they were introduced later on. Throughout the series, only three Devil Slayers have been introduced: Silver Fullbuster, Gray Fullbuster, and Bloodman. Silver Fullbuster was the first character to possess this power, receiving it after being resurrected as an Etherious by Keyes of the dark guild Tartaros.

Gray obtained his Devil Slayer abilities by defeating Silver and merging his own inherent magic with the Anti-Ethernano particles, which granted him Ice Devil Slayer Magic. Bloodman, a member of the Spriggan 12, is the third Devil Slayer in the series. As an Etherious himself, he wields the Curses and powers of the Nine Demon Gates of Tartaros. Since Silver was one of the Nine Demon Gates, Bloodman also gained access to the rare Lost Magic.
