In-game stores have become common in video games, including single-player titles like Dying Light 2, despite not being necessary for gameplay.
Dying Light 2 has unveiled a fresh virtual currency known as DL Points, enabling players to acquire cosmetic goods from the in-game store. This introduction not only enhances the gameplay experience, but also streamlines the process for developers to introduce new bundles, offering the additional benefit of discounted prices for DL Points purchases.
In-game stores have become increasingly common in the world of video games, even making their way into single-player titles that don't necessarily require them. While downloadable content (DLC) and expansions have been available for many years, in-game stores offer a different experience. Rather than allowing players to purchase new story campaigns or additional mechanics and features, in-game stores often specialize in selling cosmetic items that have little impact on gameplay. Despite being primarily a single-player game, Dying Light 2 follows a live-service model and includes its own in-game store.
Since its release in February 2022, Dying Light 2 may not have made a big impression initially, but it has gained a significant following over time. Developer Techland has kept its promise by continuously releasing updates after the game's launch. These updates have introduced new weapons, outfits, missions, enemies, and more to Dying Light 2. Many of these additions can be purchased through the game's in-game shop, which uses its own virtual currency.
Explaining Dying Light 2's New DL Points Currency
Recently, Techland, the developer of Dying Light 2, made an announcement about the introduction of a new in-game currency known as "DL Points." These DL Points will function similarly to other popular virtual currencies found in video games like Fortnite's V-Bucks or Call of Duty: Warzone's CoD Points. Players will be able to conveniently access the store button from Dying Light 2's main menu, select their desired amount of DL Points, make a purchase, and utilize them within the same store.
Techland has implemented this new currency system in Dying Light 2 for various reasons. Primarily, it aims to keep players engaged within the game. Previously, players had to exit Dying Light 2, navigate to their respective platform's storefront, purchase the desired bundle, and then load the game again. With the introduction of DL Points, all of these steps can now be completed seamlessly within Dying Light 2's main menu. Additionally, Techland benefits from this currency system as it streamlines the process of listing new bundles across multiple platforms, saving time and effort.
To encourage players to utilize the new currency system, Techland has made the promise that purchasing bundles with DL Points will technically be more cost-effective compared to buying them directly from the storefront. While the majority of Dying Light 2's cosmetic bundles can still be purchased through various storefronts, PlayStation users will be required to use the new currency system as these bundles will no longer be available on the PS Store once DL Points are introduced. Techland has expressed their intention to eventually shift all bundles to Dying Light 2's in-game store, indicating that future cosmetic bundles may not be accessible through other storefronts.
The introduction of Dying Light 2's DL Points currency will coincide with the game's next update, which currently does not have a set release date. To encourage players to try out this new system and experience its benefits firsthand, Techland will be gifting players 500 DL Points for free. Given Dying Light 2's close adherence to a live-service model, the addition of virtual currency is not particularly surprising. While it may ultimately benefit active players in the long run, there are some fans who remain wary.
Dying Light 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
