8 Silence – Level Two Spell
Top Crowd Control Spells in Baldur's Gate 3
Silence is a level two spell available to most spellcaster classes in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3). It becomes accessible once players reach level two Spell Slots. Silence proves to be a valuable spell in the early stages of battles.
7 Evard's Black Tentacle – Level Four Spell
: Enhanced Silence AbilityWhen activated, the Enhanced Silence ability creates a powerful circle on the battlefield that demands unwavering focus. Within this enchanted boundary, both foes and allies are rendered unable to unleash their magical spells. This extraordinary capability proves invaluable when confronted with adversaries proficient in spellcasting. Moreover, if strategically placed, the enchanted circle has the potential to disrupt the opposing spellcaster's abilities for prolonged periods of time, ensuring a significant advantage in combat.
Evard's Black Tentacle, a powerful spell, demands a level four Spell Slot and can only be cast by either Wizards or Warlocks who have pursued the The Great Old One subclass. This enchantment grants the ability to select a specific area bustling with adversaries and shroud it in a web of sinuous, ebony tentacles.
6 Grease – Level One Spell
- Any individual who finds themselves atop this treacherous terrain will not only experience a 50% reduction in their movement speed, making it significantly more challenging to escape, but they will also suffer bludgeoning damage each time they are unsuccessful in their attempt to withstand the effects of this accursed land.
Upon beginning their journey in Baldur's Gate 3, players may find themselves equipped with a limited array of spells to effectively deal with Crowd Control scenarios. However, there exist strategic maneuvers and spells that can be executed just by utilizing a level one Spell Slot and a fire cantrip in hand.
5 Sleep – Level One Spell
Grease is a magical spell that coats the floor with a highly flammable substance. When an opponent tries to cross it, they are likely to slip and fall to the ground. Once they are trapped within the grease, a player can unleash a fire cantrip like Fire Bolt, causing the grease to ignite and engulf everything within it. With this powerful combination, multiple enemies can be effortlessly defeated at once.
Sleep is a powerful ability that enables a player to cast a mesmerizing spell on an adversary, compelling them to forfeit their turn. In the event that the opponent remains unaffected, the captivating sleep will endure for a duration of two turns.
4 Cloudkill – Level Five Spell
Sleep is an intriguing option for Crowd Control because, despite using a level one Spell Slot to cast, it becomes even more powerful when cast at higher levels, enabling the player to target multiple adversaries. This capability enables players to lull an entire group of foes into a deep slumber for two turns, granting their party the opportunity to concentrate on other enemies.
Cloudkill, a potent spell on this list, excels at crowd control by inflicting immeasurable damage. When cast, it creates a lingering cloud of toxic gas on the battlefield, persisting as long as the caster can maintain concentration.
Each turn, the player then also has the option to relocate the toxic haze in order to encompass either a different cluster of adversaries or the foes attempting to flee. Inflicting the equivalent of five eight-sided dice in damage upon a rival implies that very few targets will remain upright, although the stipulated spell slot may deter certain individuals.
3 Cloud Of Daggers – Level Two Spell
The Cloud of Daggers spell forms a compact circle that inflicts damage upon any individual, whether they be an opponent or a player, who ventures through it. Deploying this spell strategically in a doorway or in close proximity to an opponent's expected path renders evasion nearly impossible for numerous adversaries.
2 Ice Storm – Level Four Spell
Baldur's Gate 3's AI demonstrates a certain level of intelligence, although it falls short of being truly exceptional. Even when faced with a viable safer route, the AI persistently chooses to endure unnecessary harm, much to the benefit of the player. Furthermore, this behavior persists for a duration of ten turns, granting the player additional time to manipulate their opponent's movements.
Ice Storm surpasses Grease in its effectiveness. It engulfs a broader expanse, thus confronting a greater number of adversaries. Inflicting two d8 of bludgeoning damage and four d6 of cold damage, the Ice Storm also transforms the terrain beneath the player's adversaries into an icy surface.
This lasts for a few turns before it melts, and each character must make a Dexterity saving throw to avoid slipping on the ice. Failing this roll will result in the character falling prone, rendering them vulnerable to attacks. By targeting a group of enemies, numerous foes may become prone or even sustain damage from the initial effects of the Ice Storm spell.
1 Hunger Of Hadar – Level Three Spell
Among the wide range of spells in Baldur's Gate 3, one spell that stands out as a top choice for crowd control is Hunger of Hadar, highly favored by Warlocks. By casting this spell, a circular aura of enchanting darkness is formed, which restricts the vision of players inside and prevents opponents from peering out.
Being inside the Hunger of Hadar inflicts cold damage at the start of one's turn, and potentially acid damage at the end. Coupled with the presence of difficult terrain, it becomes extremely challenging for enemies to escape from the Hunger of Hadar, making it one of the most effective crowd control spells in the game.
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently available for PC and will be released for PlayStation 5 on September 6th.
