Highlights
Fallout 76's attention to folklore and local legends adds a meaningful sense of connection to West Virginia, with over 10 mythologized creatures included.
The game showcases prominent cryptids such as the Flatwoods Monster, Mothman, and Wendigo, while making brief references to Bigfoot and the Jersey Devil without their inclusion.
Bethesda has the potential to enhance the game's lineup of cryptids by introducing regional variations of Bigfoot and other prominent creatures found in the Appalachian region. Alternatively, they could incorporate other North American cryptids like the Chupacabra or Thunderbird.
Fallout 76 features a growing collection of cryptids, including legendary creatures like Bigfoot, that are believed to exist in nature despite lacking scientific evidence. Bethesda has meticulously incorporated numerous cryptids and folkloric beasts associated with the Appalachian area, where the game is set, adding depth and a sense of connection to West Virginia. Despite featuring over 10 mythological creatures, there are still many untapped cryptids that the game has yet to include.
Currently, Fallout 76 boasts around twelve cryptids, with notable ones like the Flatwoods Monster, the Blue Devil, Mothman, and the Wendigo capturing players' attention. Additionally, the game includes the Grafton Monster and Sheepsquatch. Interestingly, it references cryptids such as Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil, and the Veggieman, without actually featuring them. As an ongoing live service game, Fallout 76 presents an opportunity for future updates and the potential inclusion of more cryptozoological creatures. Numerous prevalent cryptids from the Appalachian region remain unexplored within the game, making it a logical starting point for future additions.
Fallout 76 Needs To Add Bigfoot
While Fallout 76 mentions Bigfoot, it is not actually included in the game. Bigfoot, known as a large, monkey-like creature in North America, provides inspiration for Bethesda to explore regional variations of this legendary beast. One option could be the Argentinian Ucumar, rumored to have a terrifying scream and bear-like features. By incorporating this version of Bigfoot, Bethesda could create a formidable adversary within the game, setting it apart from Bigfoot's appearance in GTA 5 and other games.
Additionally, it would make sense to include other well-known cryptids from the Appalachian region. The Wampus Cat, originating from Cherokee folklore, could be a strong candidate. Resembling a mountain lion with an extra set of legs, it is believed to possess supernatural abilities, giving developers the freedom to create a unique combat encounter. Although Fallout 76 already features the Sheepsquatch, there are rumors of the elusive Goatman hiding in the Appalachians. While similar, including the Goatman could be an interesting option for the developers. The Veggieman, resembling Fallout 76's Solar Armor, has also been suggested as a unique addition to the game.
Fallout 76 Could Expand to Add More North American Cryptids
The developers of Fallout 76 have predominantly drawn inspiration from Appalachian folklore and urban legends when creating cryptids for the game. However, they could also incorporate other North American cryptids, such as the Chupacabra, Skin-walkers, and the Thunderbird. While this may deviate from the authenticity of local folklore, it would please fans of cryptids and offer the developers more creative freedom. Given the post-apocalyptic setting, it is not far-fetched to imagine that these creatures could have multiplied or migrated. Alternatively, the developers could introduce cryptids from different regions in future Fallout 76 expeditions.
For added creativity, Bethesda could consider featuring more lake monsters. Although the Loch Ness monster is of Scottish origin, it is the most well-known lake monster and even appears in GTA Online, which is also set in America. North America also possesses lesser-known lake and river monsters that could be incorporated into the game, like the Black River Monster or Bessie. Including these lake and river monsters would distinguish them from the game's existing legendary creatures. Regardless of which monster the developers choose to focus on next, it is evident that Fallout 76 still has numerous cryptids left to add.
Fallout 76 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
