Megan is Missing, a found footage movie released in 2011, has experienced a resurgence in popularity during the TikTok era due to its incredibly disturbing nature. This film is widely considered to be one of the most unsettling movies ever made, making it a harrowing experience that is best watched only once, if at all.
As Halloween approaches, it is an opportune time to reflect on the horror genre. While there are many different subcategories within horror, for the purpose of this discussion, we will group them into two main categories. The first category encompasses films that are spooky, creepy, or scary, including renowned classics like Halloween, Paranormal Activity, It, and The Exorcist.
Following are psychological horrors, which engage viewers with unsettling narratives that penetrate their minds and leave a disturbing impact by provoking introspection. They have the potential to challenge perceptions, confront inner demons, and provoke uncomfortable revelations about the human condition.
Megan is Missing unequivocally belongs to this category. It earned the title of the most terrifying film of 2011 for a valid reason, continuing to traumatize a new generation when it became viral on TikTok. Caution: spoilers are ahead, and some individuals may find the content distressing.
What is Megan is Missing about?
Before delving into the reasons, let's first explore the essence of Megan is Missing. Helmed by Michael Goi, this film serves as a cautionary piece on internet safety, revolving around the main character Megan, a well-liked teenage student at a high school (portrayed by Rachel Quinn). Megan's path crosses with an online predator, leading to her disappearance, which takes a dark and unsettling turn as her friend Amy (played by Amber Perkins) delves into the investigation.
According to the official synopsis, Megan, a fourteen-year-old, and her best friend Amy spend a significant amount of time online. They engage in activities such as posting videos of themselves and chatting with individuals they meet on the internet. One fateful night, Megan starts a conversation with a boy named Josh, who manages to convince her to meet him for a date. Tragically, Megan mysteriously disappears the following day. Drawing inspiration from real-life instances of child abductions, this gripping thriller will captivate you by highlighting just how effortless it is to become a victim in this modern era of technology.
Megan is Missing plays out like a snuff film
Renowned for its unsettling nature, the 2011 movie Megan is Missing continues to leave a lasting impact on audiences, emerging as a standout in the horror genre that constantly challenges boundaries and explores uneasy depths. What sets this film apart is its raw authenticity and undeniable realism.
The movie integrates a found-footage style with warnings and information, creating a realistic news alert or documentary experience. In the opening sequence, text appears on the screen stating: "On January 14, 2007, 14-year-old Megan Stewart vanished. Three weeks later, her best friend Amy Herman also disappeared. This film is compiled from cell phone transmissions, computer files, home videos, and public news reports."
This introduction sets the tone for the entire film, blurring the line between fiction and reality. As it progresses towards a shocking and disturbing climax, it unfolds like a deeply unsettling and graphic portrayal of a snuff film.

However, the narrative holds some truth as it revolves around real-life abduction cases. Goi, in fact, validated on his TikTok account that forensic investigators acted as technical advisors to enhance the authenticity and provide valuable guidance in crafting a powerful cautionary message to teenagers about online safety.
Moreover, these types of cases occur globally on a daily basis. According to the Child Crime Prevention & Safety Center, there are approximately 500,000 active online predators each day. Adolescents aged 12 to 15 are particularly vulnerable to being targeted or manipulated by adults they encounter online. Shockingly, the FBI reports that over 50% of victims of online sexual exploitation fall within this age range. Witnessing such a horrifying scenario depicted in Megan is Missing, in vivid and explicit detail, will undoubtedly deeply disturb most viewers. Even as someone who appreciates dark and unsettling content, I personally struggled with the disturbing realism portrayed in the movie.
The sexualization of teenage characters
Prior to reaching its gruesome conclusion, Megan is Missing presents multiple explicit scenes involving underage girls. Despite the fact that the actresses portraying these characters were legally adults during filming, the audience is constantly reminded that the individuals depicted are merely 14 years old.
Although there is no nudity depicted, Megan engages in a sexual act with a boy, a teenage girl cuddles with an older man, and there are explicit conversations about sex. In the concluding scene, Amy, who is stated to be 13 years old when the movie begins, is shown in her underwear while being held captive by a sadistic assailant.

Nothing will prepare you for Photo #1
However, it can be argued that these details are essential in order to effectively illustrate the harsh realities faced by teenagers today, as well as the grave issue of child exploitation. Nevertheless, it should be acknowledged that watching such content is far from easy. Critics have long suggested that Megan is Missing inadvertently perpetuates the very horrors it aims to discourage, and for those who share this perspective, even one viewing is already too much.Approximately 56 minutes into Megan is Missing, viewers are confronted with incredibly unsettling visuals that are unrivaled in their disturbance. The intensity of the scene is heightened by the chaotic portrayal of Megan's abduction on the news, showcased in an overly dramatic manner. Suddenly, the screen turns black, and text appears, bearing the following information:
"On March 4, 2007, two photographs featuring a girl, later identified as Megan Stewart, were disseminated on a fetish website bulletin board. The explicit nature of these photos alarmed the website owner, who promptly alerted the FBI. It is important to note that these images have never been made public before."

Next up is “Photo #1”: an intense close-up of Megan's face, her head tightly secured by a wooden board while her nostrils are retracted by a nose hook and her mouth forced wide open by a metal spider claw. Blood trickles down the side of her face, blending into the wood, and her wide eyes are accentuated by smudged makeup. Shortly after, another photo reveals a similar scene, this time showcasing Megan's partially exposed body confined within a wooden pillory.
The photos vividly depict the horrifying extent of her suffering, leaving little to the imagination. They are presented in a raw and unfiltered manner, making them difficult to digest. Furthermore, they emphasize the film’s main message about the perils of online grooming, forcing viewers to confront the harsh realities of child exploitation that many prefer to avoid.
As previously mentioned, the found footage style of the film adds to its authenticity, making the photos appear more like incriminating evidence rather than mere props. If you haven't watched Megan is Missing and are considering doing so this Halloween, be forewarned: once these images are seen, they cannot be unseen.
In defense of Megan is Missing
To clarify, it should be noted that the aim is not to undermine Goi’s objective. Being a father himself, he has consistently expressed his genuine intention with Megan is Missing, which was never meant to exploit the storyline for popularity. Instead, the primary goal was to shed light on and draw attention to the serious matters of abduction, online grooming, and child abuse.
When the movie became a sensation on TikTok in 2020, Goi himself used his platform to caution potential viewers. "I received a message from Amber Perkins, the lead actress in my film, informing me that it was gaining immense popularity on TikTok," he stated.
The filmmaker acknowledges that his work may be overwhelming for certain individuals. Even those who are able to handle it the first time may choose not to watch it again. As we have seen, Megan Is Missing is not the type of entertainment that one would want to revisit every time Halloween comes around.
