The Time Lord who can regenerate has faced challenges and difficulties in Doctor Who. Coinciding with the 60th anniversary, Ncuti Gatwa, a newcomer, has expressed how this relates to his new character on a personal level. Jodie Whittaker, who portrayed the 13th Doctor in only 32 episodes, is now passing on the role to Gatwa. Previous Doctors, like Christopher Eccleston in the 2005 reboot, had shorter time in the role. However, Whittaker's departure signifies the beginning of a new era for the long-running franchise.
Gatwa's addition to the sci-fi series not only brings more representation, but also adds a personal touch to the character of Doctor Who. In canon, it has been established that the time traveler is the only survivor of a genocide against their people. Although this has been retconned in recent years, the Doctor's unique experience resonates with the new actor. "This person survived a genocide. This person fits in everywhere and nowhere," Gatwa explained to Rolling Stone UK. "I am the Doctor. The Doctor is me. I made the decision that I had to get this role."
Gatwa, like the Doctor, has experienced displacement from his home. Fleeing during the Rwandan civil war targeted at the Tutsi in the '90s, Gatwa and his family eventually settled in Scotland, which he now considers his home. However, his lingering feelings of being an outsider drew him to the role of the Doctor. Similar to the Doctor, who cannot return home or see their people again, Gatwa finds solace in the character's mission of traveling through time and space to improve the lives of others.
Amidst an uncertain world, the Doctor serves as a symbol of hope. Particularly for Gatwa, this role holds great appeal following the conclusion of his previous show, Sex Education. The British comedy series tackled the sensitive topic of teenage sexuality in the real world, often resulting in difficult conversations and prejudice. Joining the cast of Doctor Who provides Gatwa with the opportunity to explore powerful and emotional themes. Additionally, the show's universe typically presents conflicts that ultimately result in happy endings.
Without a doubt, Doctor Who has explored some deeply distressing topics. Apart from portraying genocide, there have been instances when the Doctor has experienced defeat on the show. Nonetheless, it can be argued that Gatwa's understanding of the Doctor's character potentially makes him the most exceptional regeneration to date. Though avid fans of David Tennant and Matt Smith may strongly disagree, it is only when Gatwa debuts in the 60th-anniversary episode that viewers will truly judge. With the ongoing airing of Doctor Who and the upcoming seasons, it presents more opportunities to bring the show into the modern era and utilize the science fiction genre to convey timely narratives.
The premiere of Doctor Who season 14 is slated for 2024.
