Kratos wrapping up the Norse saga opens up opportunities for a spin-off game focused on Atreus.
Angrboda's involvement in God of War Ragnarok and her connection to Atreus position her as a strong contender for a companion role in a spin-off focused on Atreus.
The potential combination of Atreus and Angrboda in a future title, along with the addition of Fenrir, has the potential to generate an intriguing dynamic for a spin-off game.
With the presumed conclusion of the Norse saga in God of War Ragnarok, there are numerous possibilities for the direction of a new game. Although Kratos is expected to make a comeback in another main series installment, the ending of God of War Ragnarok sets the stage for Atreus to embark on his own adventure, making a spin-off or standalone game highly likely. While the focus of this game would primarily be on Atreus, it would be a missed opportunity to disregard the inclusion of Angrboda, who plays a significant role in the series thus far and is essential to the story of this game.
God of War Ragnarok effectively expands the existing cast, developing relationships between various characters beyond just Kratos and Atreus. While some characters' story arcs come to a close by the end of the game, there are others with untapped potential for future storytelling that a spin-off game featuring Atreus could capitalize on. Angrboda stands as one of the most compelling examples of such characters, and her connection with Atreus presents a strong case for her to be his primary companion in this game.
An Atreus Spin-Off Game Would Feel Incomplete without Angrboda
In God of War Ragnarok, Angrboda and Atreus share a profound connection as fellow Jotunn. Angrboda, being the one tasked with unveiling Atreus' destiny prior to Ragnarok, binds their fates together even more tightly. As the game progresses, it becomes evident that Angrboda and Atreus develop romantic feelings for one another, solidifying their relationship beyond a mere storyline in this game. Consequently, there exists ample potential for the exploration of their relationship in a spin-off God of War game centered around Atreus.
The dynamic between Atreus and Angrboda in God of War Ragnarok mirrors the romantic pairing between Angrboda and Loki in Norse mythology. These ancient tales portray them as lovers who give birth to three notable offspring: Fenrir, the colossal wolf; Jormungandr, the world serpent; and Hel, the ruler of the underworld. A modified version of these events unfolds in God of War Ragnarok, as Atreus uses a soul marble to revive a soulless snake in Gryla's house, thereby creating Jormungandr. Likewise, Angrboda divulges that Fenrir's soul resides within Atreus' knife, and Atreus revives the wolf by injecting his own soul into Garm's body in the realm of Helheim.
Although Atreus and Angrboda manifest the power of Atreus and Angrboda in God of War Ragnarok, it is Hraesvelgr who is the current ruler of the underworld, not Hel. This aspect of Norse mythology could be a significant plot point in a potential spin-off game centered around Atreus. Considering the ending of God of War Ragnarok, where Atreus embarks on a quest to locate the remaining soul marbles of the Giants, it would be fitting if this journey led to the creation of Hel, similar to how Jormungandr and Fenrir were created.
Before starting his journey, Angrboda entrusts Atreus with her soul marble, allowing him to visit her before she returns to her home in the Ironwood with Fenrir. The way this is arranged appears to hint at a future reunion between Atreus and Angrboda, making it a missed opportunity if the two are not reunited at some point. However, an even better scenario would involve Angrboda and Fenrir joining Atreus on his journey, as demonstrated in Final Fantasy 16, where a party consisting of two lovers and their wolf creates a charming group dynamic.
God of War Ragnarok is available for PS4 and PS5.
