A different actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe was considered for the role of Kate Bishop, Hawkeye's replacement. Jeremy Renner, who plays Clint Barton, continued his character's story in the franchise. The Disney+ show Hawkeye, which is Barton's first solo project since his introduction in Thor, introduced Kate Bishop, who is portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld in the MCU. Marvel Studios has released a screen test featuring Kathryn Newton auditioning alongside Renner for the role of Kate Bishop. You can watch the video below (via MCU News & Rumors):
Kathryn Newton's Cassie Lang Casting Makes Better Use Of Her Acting Career
- The clip is part of the Disney+ documentary titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In the video above, director Peyton Reed discusses the impact of seeing Renner's audition on his decision to cast Newton as Cassie Lang. Although Steinfeld was eventually chosen for the role of Kate in the MCU, Newton still secured a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a different character, specifically, a Young Avenger. In Avengers: Endgame, Emma Fuhrmann portrayed Cassie Lang as an adult, taking over the role from Abby Ryder Fortson who played the character in the first two Ant-Man films. Although Fuhrmann's appearance in the 2019 blockbuster was brief, there were expectations of her having a more prominent role in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects. However, in 2020, Marvel Studios decided to recast the character and introduce Kathryn Newton as the new Cassie in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantimania, as well as other future entries in the franchise.
Furhmann's performance in Avengers: Endgame was impressive despite having limited screen time. However, Marvel Studios likely considered Newton's extensive career in their decision to swap actors. At just 26 years old, she has already appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, many of which feature fantastical storytelling like Paranormal Activity 4, Freaky, and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. This makes her a better fit for a film like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which primarily takes place in the Quantum Realm, compared to the more grounded project of Hawkeye.
Fortunately, everything turned out well in the end. Newton brings excitement to her role as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, while Steinfeld is perfect in the role of Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. Both actors are expected to eventually share the screen as Cassie and Kate are being positioned as important members of the Young Avengers, a Marvel Comics team that has long been rumored to make its way to the screen via the MCU. If Marvel Studios remains faithful to the source material, it's possible that Barton and Cassie may have interactions due to their connection to Kate.
