The Resurgence of Nezuko's Voice: Demystified

Discover the intriguing reason behind Nezuko's miraculous ability to speak again in Demon Slayer Her unwavering willpower becomes the catalyst for Tanjiro's journey as a demon slayer

Nezuko's initial transformation into a demon in the beginning of Demon Slayer motivates Tanjiro to become a demon slayer. Throughout the series, she remains largely silent and is restrained with a piece of bamboo to suppress her demon instincts, which makes her unique among demons. Additionally, her ability to change size and regain strength through sleep instead of consuming human flesh adds to her uniqueness.

Typically, the inability to speak is due to her bamboo gag, resulting in muffled growls even when she attempts to talk. However, she ultimately regains her ability to speak through sheer willpower.

After her initial transformation, Nezuko starts off as a bloodthirsty demon, but regains her human traits when her brother protects her. Suppressing her demonic impulses, she becomes more childlike, making her a unique demon as previously mentioned. Unlike other demons in Demon Slayer who need human flesh and blood to survive, Nezuko sustains herself through sleep. Despite this unconventional method, she does not weaken as a demon. In fact, she easily overpowers powerful demons when she unleashes her full demonic state and then reverts back to her docile form afterwards.

The good doctor Tamayo, a fellow harmless demon, later explains that Nezuko's unique circumstances are due to her pouring all her willpower into resisting the sunlight, the natural weakness of demons, resulting in her lack of consciousness and odd childish state. However, once she managed to survive the sun, she found the power to talk again.

Nezuko’s will allowed her to speak

As the Swordsmith Village arc reaches its climax, Tanjiro is presented with a dilemma at sunrise. He must decide whether to eliminate one of the formidable Upper Moon demons or to rescue his sister.

Ultimately, he prioritizes his duty as a demon slayer over his sister's safety and successfully fulfills his mission. However, upon his return, Tanjiro is astonished to discover that Nezuko, whom he had assumed to be deceased, is standing in the sunlight.

Nezuko, with unwavering determination, defied the odds by surviving in the sunlight, a feat never before accomplished by a demon. Upon seeing her brother in the sun, she joyfully repeated Tanjiro's words, signaling her reemerging consciousness and newfound ability to speak, as noted by Tamayo. This breakthrough, achieved after the climax of the Swordsmith Village arc in Demon Slayer, marked the beginning of Nezuko's journey to reclaim her voice.

This also led to her regaining memories and potentially returning to her original maturity before her transformation into a demon. Nezuko was able to communicate in Demon Slayer by overcoming her monstrous nature and channeling her energy into living in the sunlight.

Had she not been so resolute, she might have been able to speak. Nonetheless, her unwavering determination to live as a human is truly impressive, and the moment she speaks again is truly iconic.
