In the late ’80s and early ’90s, the Kardashians and the Simpsons were very close. They raised their children together, spent time at each other’s houses, and went on tropical family vacations. But everything changed in 1994 when O.J. Simpson was arrested for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Kim Kardashian mentioned in a 2020 interview that the situation tore her family apart. Her mom, Kris Jenner, believed that Simpson was guilty, while her dad, Robert Kardashian, who represented Simpson in the murder trial, had a different perspective.
The verdict of Simpson being found not guilty of the murders shocked America. However, the Kardashians' lives were greatly impacted. A former friend of the family revealed that O.J. Simpson's presence cast a shadow of fear and sadness over them. Before his passing on April 10 due to prostate cancer, the threat he posed to the reality stars was something they had to face daily.
Years after Nicole's murder, Kim, 43, was asked by a media outlet to talk about her "Uncle O.J." She reluctantly agreed at first, but changed her mind when Simpson, who was in jail for stealing sports memorabilia, found out. In 2008, he was convicted of armed robbery and released in 2017. Simpson called Kim from prison and left a voice mail saying, "Kim, it's Uncle O.J. Hope you're doing well. I'll call you soon." The tone was neutral but firm, with a hint of a warning that left Kim scared.
Kim wasn't the only one feeling this way. According to a former friend, at that time, Jenner, 68, was still in touch with many people involved in the murder trial. The friend mentioned that it seemed like they were all afraid of Simpson and were keeping an eye on him for their safety. Even after Kim decided not to speak about Simpson, it was evident that many still viewed O.J. as a real and unpredictable threat to them and their loved ones.
Simpson’s connection to the Kardashians continued even after the trial, with rumors suggesting he might be Khloé Kardashian’s biological father. In a 2012 episode of their reality show titled “Who’s Your Daddy?”, Jenner encouraged Khloé to take a DNA test to address the speculation. However, Khloé, who was 39 at the time, chose not to go through with it. Simpson later refuted the rumors in a Father’s Day video in 2019, stating, “The truth is, she’s not my daughter.”
Robert, a longtime friend of Simpson dating back to their college days, initially believed in Simpson's innocence during the murder trial. He sought the support of the Kardashian family, including Jenner, to represent Simpson. Jenner recalled receiving a heartfelt handwritten letter from Robert, explaining his decision to stand by his friend despite the family's differing opinions on the case. It was a challenging situation as Jenner's ex-husband had his stance, she had hers, and the kids were caught in the middle.

Robert's former friend revealed that he eventually realized Simpson had lied to him, feeling betrayed and tricked into defending O.J. in the highly publicized trial. The friend mentioned that Robert was disgusted by the brutal murders and the possibility that O.J. was the perpetrator, leading to a change in him after the trial.
After the trial, Simpson closely monitored everyone involved and would reach out to them if they spoke to the media. According to the former friend, O.J. made sure not to miss any news stories and would reappear in the lives of former associates who dared to speak about him to the press. At that point, O.J. was a free man, instilling fear in those who risked incurring his anger.
The Kardashians can finally breathe a sigh of relief now that Simpson is no longer a threat. However, the uneasiness they experienced for decades will always linger. A close friend mentioned that the memory of Nicole, Simpson's ex-wife, is never far away. Photos of Nicole and her children, Sydney and Justin, were displayed on the walls of Jenner's office for years. The family is still haunted by the tragic end she faced, but they are now free from Simpson's threats.
