The toughest scare to execute in The Nun II, according to director Michael Chaves, was a scene in which Valak appears at a newspaper stand. Chaves explains that this scene was particularly challenging because they had to ensure the fluttering magazines that transform into Valak's nun form were meticulously crafted. Here's what Chaves had to say about it, as shared with Collider.
Why The Nun 2 Is A Terrifying Conjuring Prequel
The whole movie was quite challenging, to be honest. [Laughs] However, I would say that the newsstand sequence stood out as the most significant one. When it comes to creating scares, my aim is always to develop something that is truly distinct and memorable. This idea emerged early on during the movie's development and proved to be the most demanding yet fulfilling. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a never-ending journey, as I was continually refining it until the very end. It was both the first and last aspect that I worked on, and it tested me to my limits. [Laughs] I never anticipated that a single scene could push someone to their breaking point, but it definitely proved to be a formidable challenge. The demonic entity known as Valak first appeared in The Conjuring 2, where it terrorized a family in Enfield, England. Valak has since become a recurring character in The Conjuring universe and has appeared in both The Nun film series and made a cameo in Annabelle: Creation. This upcoming film is expected to provide further insight into Valak's backstory before Frenchie's inevitable exorcism and subsequent death, which occur just prior to the events depicted in The Conjuring.
In The Nun, it was discovered that Valak could be weakened but not defeated by the blood of Jesus. As a result, Valak's power makes the demon an even more terrifying antagonist in the sequel, especially since Jesus' blood has already been used unsuccessfully to try and destroy it. The outcome of the film remains uncertain, as Irene is unable to rescue Frenchie from his impending fate.
Early online reactions to The Nun II are praising it as superior to the first film, suggesting that it will deliver a plethora of unique scares. These reactions also imply that Valak will be significantly more perilous in the sequel, potentially leaving behind a lingering demonic presence that cannot be fully extinguished by the conclusion of the movie. Moreover, it is possible that The Nun II will provide an explanation for Valak's transformation from Frenchie to Enfield, thus tying up another loose end in The Conjuring universe.
