Skull and Bones, Ubisoft's open-world pirate game, has lost its third creative director, adding to the list of setbacks it has faced during development.
The game's multiple delays and underwhelming reception during its recent beta have cast doubt on its potential for future success.
Despite these obstacles, Skull and Bones is slated for release before March 2024. However, its prolonged development and the possibility of facing competition from other major releases could impact its reception.
Skull and Bones has been facing significant challenges during its development, and now it has parted ways with its third creative director. The troubles experienced by the open-world pirate game have been far from easy, and the situation has recently worsened.
When Skull and Bones was first introduced, fans were captivated by its resemblance to the beloved naval battles in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. However, the game's progress has been plagued by numerous setbacks since then. Originally scheduled for a 2018 release, the launch date was repeatedly postponed. In 2020, it was announced that Skull and Bones would be forging ahead with a "new vision," which prompted some PlayStation users to request refunds for their pre-orders.
Now, Kotaku is reporting that Skull and Bones has faced another setback with the departure of its third creative director, Elisabeth Pellen. Pellen, who had been with the development team since 2018, recently left Ubisoft Singapore to join the Paris headquarters during the summer. This news follows Ubisoft's announcement in July that four other games have been canceled.
The release of Skull and Bones has been delayed, pushing it beyond 2023. However, it is expected to still come out before the end of Ubisoft's fiscal year in March 2024. Given the game's development history, another delay is not surprising to those who have been following its progress. This delay might even be advantageous, considering the busy schedule of major releases in the fall. Ubisoft has their own highly anticipated games, including Assassin's Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, set to launch before the year ends. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is also not far behind, with a scheduled release in January 2024.
Skull and Bones was one of the few games showcased at Ubisoft's summer event, Ubisoft Forward. However, there are doubts regarding the game's current standing. With numerous delays, it is likely that enthusiasm for the title has diminished.
If the game finally arrives and exceeds expectations, everything may go smoothly. Although the previews received mixed reactions, some publications spoke highly of Skull and Bones. Perhaps a well-received game with positive word-of-mouth can prevent any downfall. However, it might be even more challenging ahead if the rumored Assassin's Creed 4 remake is indeed being developed. Skull and Bones is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
