This article contains spoilers for Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows. The first two episodes, "The Mall" and "A Night Out With The Guys," bring several significant story reveals. The show undergoes a slight reset, returning to normalcy for Nandor, Laszlo, Nadia, and adult Colin Robinson. The only anomaly is Guillermo, who acts strangely around the vampires he serves and protects. Laszlo notices this, but his attention is more focused on Gizmo's digestive issues than on the Season 4 cliffhanger where Guillermo almost became a vampire.
The vampires dismiss Guillermo's unusual behavior as trivial, even though it persists throughout a birthday dinner at the Red Rock Steakhouse. While Laszlo inches closer to uncovering the truth, Nadja tries to mend broken relationships resulting from owning her own vampire club. Meanwhile, Nandor adopts a new outlook on life after reading Thomas Anthony Harris's self-help book from 1967, titled "I'm OK - You're OK." Throughout their usual misadventures, the cast of What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 continues to explore the contradiction of superpowered vampires being out of touch and foolish despite their monstrous bloodlust.
8 Guillermo Gets Turned Into A Vampire
Becoming a vampire has always been Guillermo's ultimate goal throughout the entire series. Thanks to Derek, he finally achieves this in a remarkably grisly stockroom scene in the very first episode. Although the biting process is slightly unsuccessful, it takes weeks for Guillermo to notice any significant changes. While he does gain exceptional vision, hearing, and the ability to venture out during the day, he remains unable to transform into a bat or fly. There's a possibility that his Van Helsing lineage is somehow interfering with the metamorphosis, but regardless of the cause, Guillermo cannot afford to let Nandor discover the truth. If a familiar is turned by anyone other than their master, it would be a death sentence.
7 Adult Colin Robinson Waits Tables At Red Rock Steakhouse
Colin Robinson is back in all his adult glory, opting to trade his office job for a position as a waiter at the renowned Red Rock Steakhouse. Little does he know, this decision inadvertently creates a paradise for an energy vampire like him, where he can freely annoy and be unhelpful without worrying about relying on tips for a living. In an attempt to cheer up Guillermo, the gang decides to celebrate his missed birthday at the steakhouse, only to find themselves subjected to Colin's even more draining presence.
6 The Gang Experiences A Mall For The First Time
5 Double Vampires Explode
After treating Guillermo to a birthday outing, the group embarks on their inaugural visit to a shopping mall. Despite their centuries of existence as undead creatures, they have never set foot in such a place before, yet find themselves instantly captivated by the plethora of shops, kiosks, elevators, and escalators that surround them. Guillermo, however, has some covert tasks to attend to, piquing the curiosity of Laszlo, who endeavors to uncover the nature of his secretive endeavors. These include updating his eyeglass prescription to accommodate his newly enhanced vision since his transformation.
The second episode of Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows delves deeper into the vampire lore of the show, revealing that vampires drinking from other vampires can cause them to explode. This is demonstrated through a unfortunate encounter between Jonathan, a vampire from the poor neighborhood, and Derek, which ultimately leads to Jonathan exploding like a vampire water balloon. The reason why Derek didn't suffer the same fate is unclear, but it may be attributed to where he drank from Jonathan's body or the fact that he has Guillermo's vampire hunter blood flowing through his veins.
4 Nadja Kicks Her Blood Liquor Habit & Repairs Her Relationship With Little Nadja
3 Nandor Gets Laszlo & Sean Out Of Jail
In the fourth season of What We Do in the Shadows, Nadja had developed a notable addiction to consuming blood as she managed her own vampire club. However, as the fifth season commences, Nadja finds herself in a state of sobriety following a chaotic night that resulted in the unfortunate crushing of her doll's legs. To replace them, she acquires new legs from another toy's body, but they come with a mechanism that compels Little Nadja to lift her skirt and partake in an embarrassing performance. The situation serves as a source of humiliation for Nadja, who endeavors to find a different body for her doll at a Build-A-Bear shop in the mall. This particular scene showcases quotes that brilliantly encapsulate Nadja's character, yet their connection becomes a strained subplot that unfolds throughout the season.
In the second episode of What We Do In The Shadows Season 5, the vampire's neighbor, Sean, makes a return. Joining forces with Lazlo and Nandor, the group heads to a sophisticated wine bar in Staten Island for a night of elegance. Unexpectedly, the outing takes a dramatic turn when everyone gets arrested. Previously, Lazlo had accused Nandor of using hypnosis to mask his social ineptitude. However, in a surprising confession, Lazlo admits that he relies on his charisma to compensate for his lack of skill in that area. Nandor takes it upon himself to teach Lazlo the art of mastering hypnosis by convincing the NYPD that he is Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, while Lazlo pretends to be Tom Selleck's character from Blue Bloods.
2 The Guide Tries To Help Nadja With Her Hex
1 Laszlo Discovers Guillermo's Vampire Status
The camaraderie between The Guide and Nadja was unbreakable in the previous season. They even went to the extent of donning identical ensembles. However, their relationship has soured ever since Nadja renounced her consumption of blood liquor. In the second episode of Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows, The Guide endeavors to assist Nadja in lifting her hex, hoping to rekindle their solidarity. Unfortunately, Nadja's obstinacy complicates the process, causing frustration for both parties involved. The Guide possesses valuable knowledge on how Nadja can liberate herself from the hex, but until she grasps the underlying message, she will remain trapped, and The Guide may not wait indefinitely.
Throughout the season, Laszlo takes on the task of unraveling the mystery behind Guillermo's nervous behavior, transforming into a skilled investigator. Given Laszlo's confession of being Jack the Ripper in Season 1, it's only logical that his deductive abilities would be honed after evading Victorian detectives for so long. It doesn't take Laszlo much time to coax the truth out of Gizmo, making him the sole household member privy to this knowledge. What Laszlo chooses to do with this information is bound to be one of the most thrilling subplots in Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows.
