Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for Mortal Kombat 1.
Prior to its release, the marketing for Mortal Kombat 1 heavily emphasized the introduction of Kameo fighters. This focus is justified considering it's a significant new feature in the latest installment of Mortal Kombat. While some Kameo fighters have faced criticism for being excessively powerful when paired with certain characters, most fans are enjoying the system as it allows them to utilize additional fatalities and extend combos using their chosen ally. However, NetherRealm may have stealthily introduced a hint for their next game's gameplay mechanic, which could potentially play a major role in Injustice 3.
As players ascend the tower to confront the final boss in Mortal Kombat 1, they will encounter hybrid fighters that are delightfully entertaining. Standouts include a mime and female versions of Johnny Cage, as well as a fusion of Kung Lao and Scorpion. The appearance of these unconventional combinations has led fans to speculate that Mortal Kombat 13 might allow players to merge two fighters' movesets as its main gameplay feature. Injustice 3, however, might take this concept even further by enabling players to create their own superheroes.
MK1’s Hybrid Fighters Could Be a Stepping Stone to Custom Heroes in Injustice 3
To clarify, the development of Injustice 3 has not been confirmed, so the inclusion of player-made fighters is purely speculative. However, it seems like a natural fit for a superhero game and could be a logical progression for NetherRealm. Games like DC Universe Online and Street Fighter 6 have already had success allowing players to create their own characters. Furthermore, the concept of fully customizable fighters aligns well with the merging of existing fighters, as it provides players with complete control over their characters.
It is easy to envision a system where players choose a mentor to determine their base fighting style. For example, selecting Batman could allow players to incorporate moves from agile, technology-based characters. Wonder Woman could be the choice for powerhouses who prioritize super strength, while Green Lantern could teach players how to wield a ring. The Flash could serve as a guide for those interested in speed-based abilities. After crafting their movesets, players could then customize their character's appearance.
The gear systems in Injustice 2 and the newer Mortal Kombat games are a significant step towards allowing players to create their own characters. It's easy to envision a scenario where players can combine elements from various sets, such as Batman and Deathstroke, to craft a truly unique armored hero. Another possibility is merging gear from Wonder Woman and Superman to become a regal Kryptonian. The unlockable gear pieces and skins in Mortal Kombat 1 could greatly enhance this feature, with players unlocking new gear pieces either by defeating established characters or using in-game currency.
Once players have customized their Injustice 2 character to their preferences, they can then utilize them in the story mode. Early on in the game, players may be presented with a choice between Batman and Superman, which would then determine the outcome of the rest of the Injustice 3 story mode. This would add replayability by allowing players to experience unique good and evil playthroughs. While the chapter structure in which players switch between multiple fighters has been successful for NetherRealm, having a player-created fighter accompany the entirety of the story could provide a refreshing change of pace, particularly as it would deviate from the usual Batman versus Superman finale.
One of the most exciting aspects of this feature is the ability to use player-created fighters in online matches. Street Fighter 6 has demonstrated the immense enjoyment that comes from unique character creations, and while NetherRealm may not allow players to be as unconventional with their own hypothetical character creator, it would still be enjoyable to witness the homages and original designs that fans create. It would be ideal if Injustice 3 embraces the concept of players designing their own superheroes, as it presents a perfect opportunity for the franchise to thrive. Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available on PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
