Why Overwatch 2's Melee-Focused Support Hero Just Might Be the Ultimate Game Changer

The Overwatch 2 community has been engaged in a heated discussion about the game's future, with recent developments providing a glimmer of hope for fans. However, the franchise has had a rough few weeks after Blizzard revealed that Hero Talents for PvE were no longer in the works. This led some players to uninstall the game, while others expressed their disappointment by throwing ranked games.
Despite Season 5 being just around the corner, Blizzard has been channeling a significant portion of its efforts towards Season 6, which is still two months away. This does not mean that Season 5 is being overlooked, as the marketing department has been actively sharing details about the fantasy-themed Battle Pass. Nevertheless, a lot of buzz is being generated around what's in store for the following season, which promises a new PvP mode, training challenges, story missions, and a fresh addition to the Support hero roster.
Overwatch 2's New Support Could be Melee-Based
Fans of Overwatch 2 were eagerly anticipating the reveal of a new support hero for Season 6, as hinted by the recent content roadmap. While it was expected that more information would be unveiled towards the end of July or early August, fans were pleasantly surprised to catch a glimpse of the character in the new Overwatch 2 Invasion trailer that premiered during the Xbox Showcase on June 11. Although the character is deliberately blurred against a bright sun-lit background, it can be discerned that she is wearing a flower crown on her head. Senior Animator at Blizzard, Kyle Disanjh, also revealed on Twitter that this hero identifies with she/her pronouns, with the sun emoji at the end of the tweet potentially alluding to her lore that is linked to Peru. However, it is still unclear whether the character is wielding a large gun or a giant sword, which would make her a melee-based character similar to Brigitte and her mace.
Having another melee-focused Support in Overwatch 2 might seem enjoyable for some players, but it could also have its drawbacks. The game's transition from 6v6 to 5v5 means that Supports now have to handle more damage and defend themselves while healing one less tank. This is why it's important for the game to introduce another Support hero capable of handling flying heroes like Pharah and Echo.
If the new sun-based Support hero is limited to short-range combat, she could be at a disadvantage against aerial attacks. However, some fans speculate that the hero may have the ability to fly or at least use a boost to lift herself into the air, similar to Baptiste. The character's elongated shadows in the trailer could be either a cape or a set of wings, similar to Mercy's.
Fans eagerly await news about Season 6 and the latest Support hero from Blizzard. While we wait, Season 5 is already delivering improvements for characters like Lifeweaver, Junker Queen, Mei, and Cassidy. In the meantime, Overwatch 2 is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
