The Marvels: Brie Larson's Shocking Behind-the-Scenes Conflict With a Co-Star

Captain Marvel is getting a sequel called The Marvels, where she teams up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan.

Brie Larson's allergies prevented her from filming scenes with Goose, so animal trainers and a stunt double were enlisted instead. Marvel's first ever all-female ensemble film is scheduled to premiere on November 10, 2023.

In the upcoming film, The Marvels, Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson) will have various adventures with her fellow cast members. However, one co-star didn't have as much screen time as the others.

After four years since Captain Marvel was introduced as one of the beloved characters in the MCU, the 2019 film is finally getting a sequel. Instead of being a solo film, Carol Danvers will be accompanied by two relatively new characters. She will be reunited with Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris), who is her best friend's daughter. Additionally, she will meet Kamala Khan (played by Iman Vellani), a new mutant who happens to be her biggest fan. The three characters find themselves in a complicated situation when they realize their powers have become intertwined. Directed by Nia DaCosta, known for Candyman, this film will be the first from Marvel Studios to feature a fully female ensemble.

But one character was omitted from the festivities during the shooting of The Marvels. The prominent character, Goose, will make a comeback in the film. However, due to allergies experienced by the actor, Larson, she was unable to film any scenes with the flerken. As a result, all the scenes involving her interactions with the flerken had to be filmed either with a stunt double or one of the animal trainers present on set. In an interview with Total Film, trainer Jo Vaughan revealed, "During the action sequences with the cat, one of us would stand in a [green or blue] suit. We dedicated three months to training." The investment in training paid off, as the cats arrived on set each day fully prepared to hit their marks.

The Goose scenes in the Captain Marvel sequel utilized industry professionals, Nemo and Tango, as the cats playing the role of Goose. Nemo was responsible for the alien's action scenes, while Tango was used for close-up shots. Additionally, in The Marvels trailer, there were ten kittens used to portray the flerken babies, creating a chaotic atmosphere on set.

Despite the notorious difficulty of working with cats, the production managed to bring everything together seamlessly for the thematically intense Captain Marvel sequel, titled The Marvels. While this initially caused discomfort for actress Larson, it would have been disappointing if Goose didn't make a return. Appropriately named after a former pilot's pet, Goose was a beloved addition to the first film. Uncovering Goose's true nature as a Cthulu-like monster revealed the backstory behind Fury's eye loss and showcased a softer side to the future Director of SHIELD, as depicted in the film through his affectionate interactions with the creature, contrasting his usual ferocity. As The Marvels premieres later this year, audiences can expect more mischief and intrigue with the enigmatic flerken, who possesses hidden depths beyond what meets the eye.

The Marvels is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 10, 2023.
