Marvel Cinematic Universe Expands: Unveiling Surprising Tidbits about Brie Larson’s ‘The Marvels’ Sequel

Brie Larson returns as Captain Marvel in the highly anticipated sequel, 'The Marvels', joined by Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris Get ready for an epic adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Brie Larson returns as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers in The Marvels, taking her adventures to new heights. This time, she won't be alone. Joining her are Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (played by Iman Vellani). Together, they're going higher, further, and faster than ever before.

Larson expressed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in February that one of the main reasons she wanted to portray Captain Marvel was because of the character's connection to Ms. Marvel. She found it thrilling to witness the transformation of an inspiring individual like Ms. Marvel into a realized version on screen.

Introduced in the Disney+ TV series Ms. Marvel, Kamala is a teenager who also happens to be a dedicated fan of Captain Marvel. Throughout the show, she discovers her own latent abilities and fully embraces her new role as a superhero. The season concludes with a surprising moment where Kamala's magical bracelet starts glowing, leading to her sudden disappearance. In her absence, Carol, also known as Captain Marvel, finds herself in a room filled with fan art dedicated to her superhero alter ego, feeling bewildered by the situation.

Although Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel are anticipated to meet for the first time in the upcoming sequel directed by Nia DaCosta, Carol has a longstanding relationship with Monica. In the film set in 1995, Monica was introduced as the young daughter of Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch), who was a close friend of the Avenger. Monica reappeared as an adult in WandaVision, coping with the loss of her mother and discovering her own superhuman abilities after encountering Wanda Maximoff (portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen).

In The Marvels, the three characters' worlds collide as they switch places physically whenever they activate their powers. Larson shared in a September 2022 interview with Marvel.com, "We need to collide and bounce off each other. Our differences in powers and communication styles create an enjoyable and humorous viewing experience."

At the heart of this film are the relationships, as DaCosta hinted at during the D23 Expo in September. According to her explanation to EW at the time, Carol and Monica must rediscover their connection after being apart for a long time. Meanwhile, Ms. Marvel looks up to Carol just as Monica did when she was younger. It's intriguing to witness these two adults reconciling their relationship while a younger individual experiences a bond similar to the one shared by Monica and Carol. The way they come together forms a sisterhood with contrasting perspectives, and it's truly delightful to watch them collaborate harmoniously. Keep reading to find out everything we currently know about The Marvels, including insights into the trailer and release date.

'The Marvels' Movie: Everything to Know About Brie Larson's 'Captain Marvel' Sequel

They're going higher, further, faster! Brie Larson is back as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers in The Marvels, and she isn't flying solo this time.

The Air Force veteran with extraordinary powers will be accompanied by Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani).

"I was drawn to portraying Captain Marvel mainly because of Ms. Marvel and her significance," Larson revealed to Entertainment Weekly in February. "Witnessing this character being brought to life by an incredibly talented individual with boundless potential is truly exhilarating."

Kamala made her debut in the Disney+ TV series Ms. Marvel last year. As an avid fan of Captain Marvel, the teenager discovered her latent powers and embraced her new superhero identity on the show. In the season's climactic ending, Kamala's enchanted bracelet glowed before she mysteriously vanished. Taking her place was Carol, who found herself in a New Jersey bedroom adorned with fan art dedicated to her superhero alter ego.

The first official meeting between Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel is expected to take place on the big screen in the sequel directed by Nia DaCosta. However, it is important to note that Carol has a longstanding relationship with Monica. In the film set in 1995, Monica is introduced as the young daughter of Maria Rambeau, who happens to be the best friend of Carol, aka Captain Marvel. Monica later reappears as an adult in WandaVision, struggling with her mother's death and discovering her own superpowers after encountering Wanda Maximoff. These three characters' paths intertwine in The Marvels, where they find themselves swapping places whenever they utilize their powers.

"We had the opportunity to collide and react with each other," Larson told Marvel.com in September 2022. "We all have distinct differences - our powers, our communication styles. And that's what makes it entertaining and lighthearted to witness."

The essence of this film revolves around relationships, as DaCosta hinted at during the D23 Expo in September. "While Carol and Monica are reestablishing their relationship after a long separation, we have Ms. Marvel, who looks up to Carol the way Monica used to when she was younger," she explained to EW at that time. "So you have these two adults trying to reconcile their relationship while this younger person is experiencing a relationship that resembles the bond Monica and Carol once shared. It's fascinating to see how they come together and form a sisterhood, each with their own unique perspectives. It's genuinely heartwarming and enjoyable to watch them collaborate."
