Marvel has unveiled The Marvels movie trailer at Comic Con 2023, showcasing the diabolical plan of Zawe Ashton's new villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer also sheds light on how Carol Danvers, portrayed by Brie Larson, and her new team members undergo a switch. This transition was previously hinted at in the post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel, where Danvers switched bodies with Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani. The introduction of Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris, in the mix further explains how the powers of these characters are intertwined due to the curse by the new villain, Dar-Benn.
Marvel Studios has now released the full trailer of The Marvels, following a teaser trailer earlier this year. The trailer was released in the middle of the night during the Comic Con 2023 weekend and features Larson, Parris, and Vellani in leading roles. The movie also includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ashton as the Kree villain Dar-Benn, and Park Seo-joon as a mysterious character who is known to be an ally of Carol's. Additionally, a Funko Pop reveal confirms that Park Seo-joon's character is none other than Prince Yan, whom Danvers married in the comics. The trailer hints at a romantic connection between Danvers and Prince Yan.
The Marvels Trailer Explicitly Confirms Captain Marvel's Most Impressive Power
The MCU has previously showcased Captain Marvel's ability to absorb powers, with official supporting materials listing it as one of her superpowers. However, The Marvels is the first MCU property to explicitly validate this power. In a departure from existing MCU superpower lore, the film introduces a concept of Danvers, Monica, and Khan exchanging their light-based abilities. Rambeau explains that their powers were bound together by Dar-Benn to hinder their resistance. Ultimately, this alignment will unite them and enhance their collective strength, highlighting another instance of an MCU villain lacking foresight.
Furthermore, Dar-Benn bestows a new, considerably more impressive nickname upon Captain Marvel by dubbing her "the Annihilator." She also outlines her vengeful plan following Danvers' actions that resulted in Dar-Benn losing everything. Dar-Benn is portrayed as a zealous character, likely having formerly aligned herself with Ronan The Accuser, played by Lee Pace, and still nursing wounds from Captain Marvel's triumph over the Kree army in the eponymous film. The Marvels also confirms that Dar-Benn possesses the counterpart bracelet to Ms Marvel's own superpowered trinket, resembling the Power Stone and granting her similar abilities to Ronan. The reasons behind the divergence in their powers from Ms Marvel's remain unclear.
