Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has unveiled its first gameplay footage, much to the delight of fans who have waited since its initial announcement in 2021. The 13-minute trailer revealed an array of exciting features and additions to the game, including the ability to play as both Miles Morales and Peter Parker, the iconic Symbiote suit's presence in both the story and gameplay, and new traversal mechanics such as the Web Wings. However, the trailer's most intriguing moments were centered around the game's new villains, with Kraven the Hunter and The Lizard both making an appearance.
The Lizard's Potential Role in Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Dr. Curt Connors, a brilliant scientist, made his comic debut in 1963 as The Lizard, one of Spider-Man's most iconic and sympathetic villains. His lifelong research in genetics was driven by the hope of regrowing his missing arm and helping others in similar situations. Unfortunately, his experiments led to him transforming into a hulking Lizard. Although Spider-Man was able to create a cure, Connors still experiences unexpected and severe transformations. The Lizard has been a popular character in Spider-Man video games for many years, appearing in almost every major Spidey game from the PS1 era to 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. With two teases already in Insomniac's Spider-Man series, it was only a matter of time before The Lizard made his full-force appearance.
Players of Marvel's Spider-Man can discover hidden backpacks scattered throughout New York City, left behind by Peter over the course of his eight-year tenure as Spider-Man. These backpacks serve as a clever tool used by Insomniac to provide players with crucial pieces of lore about their own Spider-Man universe, offering a condensed history of the hero's adventures thus far. One backpack in particular, named "The Lizard's Blood," confirms that Peter has already encountered the Lizard at least once during his time as a crime fighter, providing him with an antidote to revert Curt Connors back to his human form. In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the first sighting of Dr. Curt Connors in the series is made. In the post-credits scene, Connors is seen working for Norman Osborn in an attempt to cure his son, Harry, of a mysterious and life-threatening illness.
The recently released gameplay trailer of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 showcases the on-screen debut of Insomniac's Lizard, with Peter and Miles in pursuit of him while protecting him from Kraven's hunters. The urgency of the chase is highlighted when Peter reveals to Miles that they need to catch the Lizard as Harry's life is at stake, and he is the only one who can save him. This hints at the possibility of Curt Connors/The Lizard playing a more significant role in the game's storyline, especially with his ties to Norman and the Symbiote's origins. It raises the question of whether he could aid Peter in defeating the Symbiote's parasitic hold and saving Harry's life.
