Taylor Swift's support for the Netflix series "Heartstopper" became evident when she granted permission for her song "Seven" from the album "Folklore" to be featured in the season 2 finale. In an interview with Elle, executive producer Patrick Waters shared his belief that Taylor Swift and her team are fans of the show, as they were extremely receptive and helpful, unlike some other artists who presented challenges in getting their music included.
During the season, observant fans may have noticed a Folklore poster hanging in Tara's (played by Corinna Brown) bedroom. However, it wasn't until the season 2 finale that a song from the album was played. Initially, the Heartstopper team only sought permission for the poster, but they went a step further by sending clips and writing letters to Swift's team. They explained that the track "Seven" held significance for a pivotal moment in the show. According to Walters, although the lyrics didn't perfectly align with Darcy's storyline, there was something about certain lines that resonated with Tara and Darcy, prompting the association.
The Paris Squad, the main characters, opt to leave prom and instead spend their time at Nick's house to avoid the scrutiny of their classmates, who were fixated on the openly LGBT students. It was a tense evening for Tara, who mistakenly believed she was being stood up, only to discover that Darcy had actually fled her home the night before following a confrontation with her homophobic mother.

"Darcy possesses an immense strength of character and a firm sense of self, leading her to reach a breaking point where she can no longer tolerate her current circumstances," noted director Euros Lyn. "In her perspective, the only solution is to flee from her home, yet she remains unwilling to admit this to Tara."
Only when they find themselves at Nick's house do Tara and Darcy truly open up to each other. Darcy confesses that instead of staying at Tara's house, she has been sleeping in the park. She wanted to appear strong for Tara, but in doing so, she unveiled the fact that she has not come out to her parents. Darcy explains that Tara has only witnessed a portion of her life, making it impossible for her to truly understand if she loves her. "I am a complete disaster," admits Darcy.
"Oh, I really appreciate how beautifully chaotic you can be," Tara remarks. This statement prompts Darcy to finally confess her love for her girlfriend. Enter Taylor Swift's music as the backdrop.
"After that scene between Tara and Darcy, we had this wonderful montage of their friend group enjoying themselves outside of prom. They were just being their authentic selves with each other, free from any judgment or outside influence," Walters reflects. "The song perfectly complemented that moment, so once we saw it, we knew we had to get Taylor Swift's permission to use it."

Following a tender embrace, Tara and Darcy finally indulge in a long-awaited dance, a missed opportunity from their high school prom. Their circle of friends — Nick, Charlie (Joe Locke), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), and Isaac (Tobie Donovan) — join them to ensure their well-being before collectively engaging in lively party games, cherishing their time together and reveling in the company of one another, away from the prying eyes of their fellow classmates.
Heartstopper music supervisor Matt Biffa confirmed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Swift gave her approval after seeing the scene. According to him, Swift found the scene beautiful and agreed to make it work. This suggests that Swift did not ask for a significant fee for the song. One fan expressed surprise at Swift's willingness to accept less money for a scene that celebrates sapphic love and queer joy, showcasing the song "seven" in the background.
Biffa replied on Saturday, August 5, “Sometimes art is more important than $$$.”
Heartstopper has been renewed for season 3.
