Dave Filoni, with his extraordinary understanding of the Star Wars universe, continues to amaze fans with one successful project after another. In just one season of this particular show, he achieved more than most filmmakers accomplish in three movies. The conclusion of Ahsoka's first season left fans eagerly anticipating what is to come in the future.
As Grand Admiral Thrawn teeters on the brink of triumph, Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger brace for a pivotal battle that could shape the galaxy's destiny. The Chimaera looms above the Nightsister tower, prepared to deploy as the Night Troopers load the final storage container. Meanwhile, Baylan Skoll embarks on his own quest, in search of a power he could not adequately explain. This thrilling finale had fans on the edge of their seats.
What Happened in Ahsoka's Finale?
Despite the calm demeanor of the heroes, time was of the utmost importance as Grand Admiral Thrawn hastily prepared the containers of the dormant Nightsisters, intending to swiftly return to the distant galaxy he had been absent from for over a decade. Aware of Ahsoka and her two Bokken Jedi's intention to thwart him, Thrawn, being the brilliant tactician he was, aimed to stall them long enough to prevent their boarding of his ship.
As anticipated, the trio of Jedi arrived at the Nightsister spire and, undeterred by the barrage of artillery fire raining upon them from the Star Destroyer, managed to gain entry. However, the task of reaching the ship was far from simple, as they soon discovered. Upon entering, they were met with a platoon of Night Troopers who fervently attacked them with blaster fire. Just when it seemed that the heroes had neutralized every trooper, the Great Mothers resurrected them, compelling them to resume the assault. Consequently, the Jedi were left with no choice but to hastily ascend the stairs in retreat.
With the zombie troopers in pursuit, Morgan Elsbeth confronts them using the Blade of Talzin. Ahsoka, on the other hand, instructs Ezra and Sabine to continue forward and capture Thrawn. Despite encountering minimal resistance at the top of the spire, Ezra and Sabine become disheartened as the Star Destroyer appears too far away. However, Sabine relies on her Force powers and assures Ezra that she can bridge the gap. Although Ezra initially hesitates, Sabine successfully fulfills half of her promise by getting Ezra onto Thrawn's ship, but she remains behind to aid Ahsoka against Elsbeth.
Ahsoka and her apprentice triumph over Elsbeth and the Night Troopers, but they are unable to catch up to the Star Destroyer in time. Thrawn, accompanied by the three witches, escapes, leaving Peridea behind. Unbeknownst to the Grand Admiral, Ezra conceals himself and skillfully takes control of a small shuttle to search for his companions, Chopper and General Hera Syndulla, whom he has not seen since the conclusion of the Rebels series. Unexpectedly, Thrawn's final destination turns out to be Dathomir, a location that fans have yet to witness in live-action.
Meanwhile, Ahsoka, Sabine, and Hyuang establish Peridea as their new home, and fans catch a final glimpse of Hayden Christensen portraying Anakin Skywalker, quietly observing Ahsoka. He expresses his endorsement for the path she has chosen with a subtle smirk. However, the trio is not alone in their predicament on Peridea. Shin Hati, absent until the very end of the finale, emerges among the bandits she once combated, asserting her leadership by igniting her lightsaber. And then there is Baylan Skoll.
What Ahsoka's Finale Means for the Future of Star Wars
In a surprising turn of events, the enigmatic Baylan Skoll is discovered perched upon the outstretched hand of a colossal statue representing the Father, an embodiment of balance within the Force. Flanking this magnificent monument are intricately carved figures depicting the Son and Daughter, with the latter sadly bereft of her head. Skoll gazes into the distance, his eyes fixated on a flickering beacon atop a majestic mountain. Filoni's intention to delve further into the tale of Mortis is evident, be it through an upcoming series or a second season of Ahsoka. This exciting prospect inevitably implies the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin, whose connection with the Mortis Gods is profound. Furthermore, it raises the possibility of introducing a legendary character from the annals of Star Wars lore: Abeloth, known as the Mother.
In the upcoming season of Ahsoka, the Mortis storyline will be explored, along with Ahsoka's training of Sabine and her establishment of a new Jedi Order. Unless the New Republic retrieves the Eye of Sion from Thrawn, Ahsoka and her group will remain on Peridea. This presents exciting possibilities for Star Wars filmmakers to create fresh storylines within this new setting. Unfortunately, the passing of Ray Stevenson necessitates the recasting of Baylan Skoll, and finding an actor to match Stevenson's depth and gravitas will be a challenge, as he set a high standard for acting in Star Wars.
Meanwhile, in the original Star Wars galaxy, tensions are rising as war looms. With Grand Admiral Thrawn's return, the remaining Imperial factions are uniting to wage war against the unprepared New Republic. Their only advantage is Ezra's warning, though it remains uncertain if anyone will heed it. However, the situation does not bode well for the heroes, as they transport numerous containers filled with unknown contents to Dathomir. Ezra's mention of Thrawn awakening the three Nightsisters leads many to believe that each container houses a dormant Nightsister. This would give the Empire an army of Force-wielding witches to contend with in the next season of Ahsoka as the Republic faces new challenges.
