In Rurouni Kenshin episode 15, Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko headed to the Maekawa Dojo for their training. However, while they were there, a man named Raijuta Isurugi arrived with his apprentice, Yutaro Tsukayama. Raijuta challenged the dojo's master, Miyauchi Maekawa, to a duel using bamboo swords.
Raijuta emerged victorious, delivering such a powerful blow to Maekawa that the bamboo blade snapped in half. Yet, this wasn't enough for Raijuta, as he then attempted to take Maekawa's life with the broken blade. Fortunately, Kenshin intervened and rescued Maekawa, sparking a new duel between him and Raijuta. The duel concluded with neither side emerging as the clear winner, leading Raijuta and Yutaro to depart.
Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko then returned and informed Sanosuke about the events.
