Since the introduction of the first Xbox, Halo has been closely tied to it. Originally developed as an Apple Mac exclusive and later acquired by Microsoft, Halo: Combat Evolved became the standout game for the original Xbox, surpassing even other launch titles. Halo influenced consumers to choose an Xbox over a PlayStation 2 or GameCube, and this trend has continued for many years. While not the sole reason for purchasing an Xbox 360, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X, Halo has been a significant contributing factor. However, this is now starting to change.
So confident in its impact, Halo Infinite was prominently displayed on the Xbox Series X packaging, signifying it as the next evolution in the franchise and a significant advancement showcasing the power of the new console. Unfortunately, the reality of Halo Infinite's performance fell short of being the game-changing app that Xbox desperately needed, causing significant harm to the brand. Despite assurances from 343 Industries that they remain committed to the Halo series, the next installment will face immense pressure unlike any previous Halo game.
The Pressure on the Next Halo's Shoulders Could Be Too Much
The shortcomings of Halo Infinite are widely recognized. Although its multiplayer component harkened back to the series' heyday and its single-player campaign ventured into new territory, the game initially fell short. By adopting a live-service approach, Halo Infinite lacked essential maps and modes upon release, disappointing fans. Moreover, 343 Industries took a considerable amount of time to address these issues, providing only four seasonal updates over the course of a year and a half.
Despite the negative attention and public reception, 343 Industries remains confident in its ability to rectify the situation. The team bears immense pressure to deliver on this promise. However, many fans would prefer a fresh start, where 343 Industries begins anew with a brand-new Halo game. If this were to happen, the next installment would face even greater anticipation and expectations from fans.
When the next Halo game is released by 343 Industries, fans will undoubtedly expect it to be flawless right from the start. In all honesty, this is a reasonable expectation. While the live-service model works well for developers who consistently deliver new content, it seems that 343 Industries is not one of those developers. Therefore, fans will demand that the next Halo game meets certain criteria on its launch day, including all the familiar modes, maps, and features that have become synonymous with the series.
Adding to this already high level of pressure is the fact that Halo will no longer be Microsoft's only major first-person shooter franchise. With the imminent completion of the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, Xbox will soon have ownership of Call of Duty as well. Although there has always been a friendly rivalry between Halo and Call of Duty, they have mostly coexisted peacefully. However, now that they will be united under the same company, the pressure to outshine one another may become overwhelming for 343 Industries and the Halo franchise.
Halo Infinite is available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
