Summary
Director Brian Duffield discusses the possibility of a sequel to his small-scale sci-fi movie No One Will Save You.
Duffield jokes about the idea of doing a sequel every seven years, but he actually isn't fond of sequels.
However, if the movie receives sufficient viewership on Hulu and if there is a significant demand for a sequel, Duffield is willing to consider the possibility. As of now, there is no concrete plan for a franchise.
No One Will Save You director Brian Duffield has discussed the possibility of a sequel for the small-scale sci-fi movie. Duffield, who also wrote the film, explores the story of Brynn (played by Kaitlyn Dever), a young woman grieving in an isolated home that becomes the target of a deadly alien invasion. The movie made its debut on Hulu on September 22.
In a recent interview with Slash Film, Duffield was asked about the potential for a sequel following the ending of No One Will Save You. While he humorously mentioned the idea of making a new movie every seven years, similar to the Before Sunrise trilogy, he admitted not being particularly inclined towards creating sequels. However, he added that if there is enough demand, he would be open to discussing the possibility. Here is his full statement:
Could No One Will Save You 2 Happen?
I am not particularly fond of making sequels. I jestingly mentioned to Kaitlyn that perhaps every seven years we could create a follow-up film, similar to "Before Sunset," and make it for your benefit. While I am open to the idea of a sequel, I do not currently have any plans to pursue one. However, if a substantial number of individuals were to watch it on Hulu and there was a significant demand for it, then we could discuss the possibility. As of now, I do not have a detailed blueprint for turning it into a franchise. It would require a considerable amount of effort, leaving me feeling overwhelmed with the pressure of having to come up with something.
Kaitlyn Dever stars in the film No One Will Save You. However, there is not a clear precedent for a potential sequel. Director Duffield, despite his desire to continue working with Dever, admits that he is not typically inclined towards making sequels. Although Duffield has written seven screenplays, only two of them have resulted in sequels. In fact, Spontaneous, a dark teen comedy, is the only other film he has directed so far.
The movie The Babysitter was followed by The Babysitter: Killer Queen, although Duffield did not write it. The same was true for his screenplay for The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which itself was a sequel to Divergent. While this may not bode well for a No One Will Save You sequel, Hulu's track record with successful genre movies is also not encouraging.
Since 2019, when Hulu started releasing original movies, only one film, the comedy Vacation Friends, has received a sequel. This is surprising considering that Hulu had two highly successful horror movies in 2022, Hellraiser and Prey. Neither of these movies has been confirmed for a sequel, but the fact that the aliens in No One Will Save You are not already established licensed characters (and therefore less expensive) might convince Hulu to give the green light for a sequel.
