The open beta for The Finals, the free-to-play shooter developed by Embark Studios, former creators of Battlefield, is garnering significant popularity among players. In fact, it has become so popular that Embark states the game is nearing its server capacity limit.
On October 26, The Finals launched its open beta, offering players on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 the opportunity to experience the intense, team-based FPS gameplay firsthand. In an announcement shared on The Finals' official Twitter account, the Embark team expressed their surprise at the overwhelming response the beta received, describing the first 24 hours as "chaotic." They also revealed plans to implement a temporary login queue while they work on expanding the game's server capacity.
"Due to the overwhelming number of players accessing the game, we have reached our capacity limits," states the announcement. "To ensure an optimal gaming experience for current players and as we work on expanding our capacity, we will be implementing a temporary login queue."
The exact number of console players is not known, but The Finals beta has been one of the most popular games on Steam since its launch, with a peak of over 143,000 players. The Finals supports cross-play and cross-progression across different platforms, and any Battle Pass rewards earned during the open beta will carry over to the full game release (although an official release date hasn't been announced yet).
Players can try out the fast-paced shooter and its unique game-show style for slightly over a week, as the beta will conclude on November 5th. The open beta test features a new location called Skyway Stadium and a fresh game mode called Bank-It, which haven't been available in previous trials. Bank-It is described as a casual-friendly mode wherein four teams of three battle it out to collect money from vaults and defeated opponents. Overall, the beta offers a selection of 20 weapons, 26 gadgets, and nine abilities for players to experiment with.
During Xbox's recent Partner Preview livestream, a new trailer for the game and its beta announcement showcased the captivating game-show aesthetic of The Finals, along with its impressive environmental destruction features.
