Filming for Venom 3 is set to begin soon, with new shooting locations providing hints for eager fans.
While the studio focuses on its recent Spider-Man projects such as Kraven the Hunter, fans can rest assured that Sony Pictures has not forgotten about Venom. The sequel to 2021's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom 3, was announced in 2022 as a possibly final chapter in the symbiote trilogy. Sony has been relatively quiet about the plot for Venom 3, but they have announced Kelly Marcel's promotion from writer to director. Other announcements include the potential casting of Chiwetel Ejiofor as a villain in Venom 3 and Juno Temple's involvement in an undisclosed role.
News of the upcoming Venom 3 film production has recently emerged from Cartagena, Spain. According to reports by Murcia Today, the crew has been diligently constructing sets for several weeks in the picturesque neighborhood of Los Mateos. Production manager Tate Aráez explained that Los Mateos was chosen due to its striking resemblance to certain streets in Mexico. Excitingly, the Cartagena City Council has officially given approval for filming in Calblanque, a breathtaking nature reserve along Spain's coast that boasts stunning beaches.
Cartegena's connection to the Venom 3 plot stems from Eddie Brock's previous appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In a post-credits scene, Eddie and Venom find themselves in a Mexican bar, grappling with the abundance of super-powered beings in the MCU. Determined to locate Peter Parker, Eddie intends to pursue him until Doctor Strange's spell sends him back to his own universe. The scene concludes with a glimpse of a fragment of symbiote left behind.
The symbiote has been featured in various instances beyond Tom Hardy's Venom film series, notably in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 from 2007. This presents several possibilities for incorporating the symbiote into the MCU alongside Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Cartagena was chosen for its visual resemblance to Mexico, suggesting that Venom 3 may continue this storyline, at least in part. However, there remain uncertainties about how Venom 3 will unfold within the multiverse context, particularly with the inclusion of Eddie Brock's San Francisco in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Contrary to the last appearance of Eddie Brock, his connection to Mexico might be unrelated. Pictures taken in Spain hint that a portion of the movie will take place during Diá de los Muertos, the Mexican festival honoring the deceased. With Sony Pictures withholding further details, fans can only guess what Eddie Brock and Venom's upcoming escapade will entail.
The anticipated release date of Venom 3 is slated for October 2024.
