The Epic Battle Between Avowed and Skyrim: Which Open-World Game Reigns Supreme?

Obsidian Entertainment claims that Avowed's vastness exceeds Skyrim's, but rather takes inspiration from their own success with The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment has recently clarified that Avowed will not be as large as The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but will instead be comparable in size to The Outer Worlds. The initial announcement of Avowed sparked high expectations for a Skyrim-sized RPG, however, it seems that development has led the developer in a different direction. It remains to be seen how the community will react to this change. The game was first revealed in July 2020 with a trailer that showcased breathtaking landscapes, towering castles and deep caverns reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings. However, the game disappeared from public view for three years following its initial announcement.

Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming game, Avowed, has undergone considerable changes since its initial pitch in 2020. The most notable difference is the scale of the game, which Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart admits has been altered. While the original plan was to create a game similar to Skyrim, Urquhart now says that Avowed is more akin to the studio's past RPGs like The Outer Worlds. As development progressed, Obsidian decided to veer away from making a copy of Skyrim and instead focus on creating their own unique style of RPG.

Avowed's priorities are currently centered around storytelling, with a focus on depth rather than breadth. This is evident in the early screenshots, which depict a more compact world than sprawling open-world games like Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption 2. The game's aesthetic appears to be similar to that of The Outer Worlds, and while there hasn't been much controversy surrounding the shift in direction, there are still many fans hoping for a similar experience to Fallout: New Vegas. Regardless, Avowed is sure to offer a unique and engaging gameplay experience.

Avowed releases in 2024 on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
