The recent introduction of House Damodred in The Wheel Of Time paves the way for the potential inclusion of the character Galad in upcoming episodes, while also establishing a significant link to Rand's past. In season 2, episode 4 of the Amazon series, titled "Daughter of the Night," viewers witnessed Moiraine's intense family reunion with her sister, Anvaere Damodred, further delving into Moiraine's personal history and establishing the importance of this family lineage in both the present and future of the show.
House Damodred & Moiraine’s Backstory In The Wheel Of Time Books Explained
: Unveiling Moiraine's Past: A Surprising Revelation of Her Childhood and Family HistoryMoiraine, in Robert Jordan's novels, possesses regal lineage as a member of the ruling family of Cairhein, a prominent city-state in The Wheel of Time's universe and Rand's current abode in the series. Specifically, she is the niece of Laman Damodred, the sovereign of Cairhein. Although her position in line to the throne was quite distant, the demise of the king and his brothers during the conflict with the Aiel presented her with the opportunity to seize power. However, she actively avoided any involvement in governance. As a result of her refusal and the unsuitability of other candidates, the reins of authority in Cairhein were assumed by House Riatin instead.
What Wheel Of Time Has Revealed About House Damodred
The power struggle in Cairhein and Moiraine's involvement (or lack thereof) was mentioned in the TV adaptation during her conversation with Anvaere. It remains unclear how closely the books' version of House Damodred aligns with its TV representation, but it appears that in both versions, Moiraine distanced herself from her family. Anvaere, bitter about Moiraine's absence, highlighted that she left them two decades ago with no intention of returning. Moiraine blamed their uncle, possibly Laman, for their downfall, which resulted in House Damodred's decline.
Evidently, House Damodred has been struggling for a considerable time. Nevertheless, Anvaere remains hopeful that the family will make a comeback. She believes that her unnamed son will marry "the queen." Presuming she is referring to the current queen of Cairhein, this union could help House Damodred regain some of its previous power in the city. Given the significant presence of House Damodred in The Wheel of Time books, their continued relevance does follow logic.
Why Moiraine Left House Damodred
Wheel Of Time Season 2’s House Damodred Continues The Setup For A Major Book Character
While one might assume that Moiraine's absence from her family for such a prolonged period was solely due to her aspirations as an Aes Sedai, the truth is not likely as straightforward. Interestingly, the timespan Anvaere established - spanning 20 years - intriguingly aligns with Moiraine's dedicated pursuit of the Dragon Reborn. Considering that her primary objective for an extended period was to search for him, it becomes clear why she did not return home. Her unwavering priority was to locate him above all else.
The introduction of House Damodred in The Wheel of Time holds significant implications for future developments. While its relevance to the show's current storyline may be minimal, politics play a crucial role in the book series, especially when the allegiances and motives of influential figures shape major events such as war. The Wheel of Time explores various characters involved in the political sphere, including Caraline and Barthanes, both of whom belong to House Damodred. Additionally, Galad, a prominent character yet to be depicted in The Wheel of Time's cast, also hails from the Damodred lineage.
Introduced in the first book, The Eye of the World, Galededrid Damodred is Moiraine's nephew. Prior to the events in the books, Moiraine's brother, Taringail Damodred, married Queen Morgase of Andor, thus making Galad a member of both families. By becoming part of the royal family, Galad also became the step-brother of Gawyn and Elayne Trakand, Queen Morgase's children. Renowned for his unwavering moral principles, Galad's character plays a significant role in The Wheel of Time series as he rises within the ranks of the Whitecloaks.
The formal introduction of House Damodred brings the show closer to featuring Galad. Already, his arrival has been foreshadowed with the introduction of his sister, Elayne. It feels like it's only a matter of time before Galad is either mentioned by Elayne in Wheel of Time or shown on screen. Furthermore, with Anvaere making an appearance in Cairhein, it is likely that other members of House Damodred, including Galad, will also be involved in that storyline. Alternatively, Galad's introduction could be saved for when the show introduces the Andorian royal family.
How House Damodred Is Connected To Rand
House Damodred, interestingly, has a loose connection to the background of the Dragon Reborn. While Rand is not directly related by blood, their connection can be traced back to his origin story in The Wheel of Time books. In the opening sequence of episode 7 of season 1, a woman named Tigraine Mantear is depicted fighting in the Aiel War against the soldiers of Cairhein. Later, it is revealed that Tigraine is Rand al'Thor's mother. In the books, Tigraine was once married to Taringail Damodred from House Damodred.
Although Tigraine fought alongside the Aiel, the character in the books was actually an Andorian noblewoman. To strengthen the ties between Andor and Cairhein, Tigraine was arranged to marry Taringail from House Damodred. However, she eventually left House Damodred and encountered Janduin, an Aiel chief who would become Rand's father. This aspect of Rand's backstory has yet to be explored, but now that House Damodred has been introduced in the show, it is likely that it will be fully explored in The Wheel of Time's future episodes.
The Wheel of Time releases new episodes on Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
