In the upcoming second season, viewers can anticipate awe-inspiring action sequences and an unforgettable climactic culmination set within the newly introduced city, Falme. Embarking on a worldwide search, they may stumble upon unexpected sources of power and, with any luck, unite in the final showdown to vanquish the Dark One once and for all.

Starring Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, Josha Stradowski, and Marcus Rutherford, The Wheel of Time introduces Dònal Finn as the new portrayal of Mat Cauthon in the second season. Screen Rant: Can you tell us a little bit about where we are in Tar Valon? This is a very real place.

Ondřej Nekvasil: We are currently in the tea room at Tar Valon, which we introduced in the first season. In that season, we witnessed Moiraine enjoying her tea while observing [Nynaeve and Loial], who were positioned just behind us in that corner.

Upon entering the room, you guys activated the water, creating a remarkably authentic effect. Could you elaborate on the utilization of practical effects on a genuine set like this?

Ondřej Nierostek: Our goal is to incorporate practical effects as much as possible in the show. We have a talented visual effects department to support us, allowing us to enhance or make slight adjustments to the practical effects. However, regardless of the situation, such as rain, we strive to make it practical.

We aim to utilize the maximum space available, ensuring that viewers truly believe in the authenticity and impact of the effects. This applies to elements like wind, smoke, and fires. Whatever we employ, our intention is to have it as close to the actors as feasible. Even with explosions, we want them to be as proximate to the camera as possible, creating a sense of danger and realism.

How does the presence of water effects, wind, lighting effects, and fire in a large standing set like the streets of Tar Valon impact the construction and placement of details? Specifically, does water affect the materials used on the set?

Ondřej Nekvasil: Yes, it definitely does. We have to consider that the entire pavement is made of concrete that has been altered and manipulated to resemble stone. However, it is still concrete and designed to withstand the test of time. The same principle applies to the facade, which primarily consists of boards and plaster molds. We must ensure that everything is secured properly to withstand rain, snow, and strong winds.

We must consider how to safely bring and use fire on set, whether it be through practical fireplaces, fire pits, or access to gas. The challenge with practical effects is maintaining consistent burning for an extended period of time without endangering the set. Similarly, with rain effects, it is not enough to create a short burst of rain but to sustain it for multiple days. Special effects need to be constant, repetitive, and done in a safe manner. After constructing the set, we need to ensure that water drainage is planned so that we do not end up with deep puddles. When using fires on the facades, we must be cautious to use materials that are resistant to burning. It is essential to prioritize safety and thorough planning in order to avoid any accidents.

Which set is the most difficult to execute or work on, considering the constraints and limitations?

Ondřej Nierostek: It depends on the specific scene we are working on. For instance, Ondřej mentioned that we had planned to burn down a house, but due to safety concerns related to the season and location, it was not feasible to do so. Instead, we had to construct sets on stages, including the interior, but starting a fire inside the set was not an option. This required collaboration among all departments to find a practical solution.

We illuminated the area with electric lamps and flame bars positioned strategically. Subsequently, we constructed a brand new house solely for the purpose of setting it ablaze, capturing the spectacular visual effect. The resulting footage was then integrated with the scenes captured earlier.

How long do you have to build larger sets such as Tar Valon?

Ondřej Nekvasil: We had 18 weeks to construct Tar Valon, which means six working days per week. This 18-week timeframe is the minimum required for building a set of that magnitude. However, prior to construction, we do allocate time for designing. Initially, the construction team receives the general drawings of the facades, while the specific details such as doors, windows, and shutters are finalized in the workshops.

Ondřej Nekvasil: In Prague, we are based at the Jordan Studios, which houses six extensive stages filled with sets. Additionally, we have another large stage located nearby, just a 10-minute drive away, that features the key set of the White Tower and various other sets. We also have a designated backlot area where the Tar Valon set is situated. Furthermore, we have a separate location outside of Prague where we have created the two rivers backlot set. Currently, we have these two spacious backlots along with seven large stages that are dedicated solely to this show. If necessary, we can even create additional stages specifically tailored for certain scenes.

In season 2, there is an increase in the number and strength of characters. Can you discuss the process of enhancing the special effects to bring these larger action sequences to life?

Ondřej Nierostek: When approaching these actions, we first consider the script and analyze the specific requirements. We then determine whether to achieve the desired effect on the set or through post-production visual effects. Sometimes, due to limitations, we cannot create intense wind conditions in a small location as it may cause damage. Therefore, the approach varies depending on factors such as location and activity. Each day brings a new set of considerations and challenges.

What aspect of season 2 are you most eager for audiences to witness?

Ondřej Nekvasil: Thank you. I believe that the inclusion of new locations, especially the introduction of Falme, a city that will be featured in the latter half of the second season, will pique the audience's interest. The grand finale takes place there, and I believe it will be an exceptional experience for viewers. With numerous captivating scenes and a riveting storyline unfolding in Falme, it promises to be a unique and captivating experience for the audience.
