This article contains spoilers for Lies of P.As players gradually complete their adventures in Lies of P, many are curious about what lies ahead for this surprising Soulslike hit. Developed by Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio, Lies of P managed to deliver an authentic Souls experience, even though it is not directly connected to FromSoftware, the pioneers of the genre. Additionally, the game offered an intriguing twist on Carlo Collodi's classic novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio, with its gameplay, art design, and narrative standing up to those found in FromSoftware's own library. Consequently, all eyes are now on the developers of Lies of P to see what they have in store for their next endeavor.
However, there are already indications of upcoming DLC for Lies of P based on a recent job listing. Fans have also noticed an inactive green Stargazer in close proximity to a promising starting point for a new chapter. Furthermore, the game concludes with a sequel hook, teasing a classic storybook premise that is significantly different from the multiple endings. Considering the potential of reinterpreting public domain stories as modern games, the Lies of P universe could easily accommodate another well-known narrative if the hints turn out to be true.
The Next Lies of P Could Shift From Pinocchio to Oz
After assuming the identity of a merchant named Giangio, the real-life alchemist Philippus Paracelsus surfaces in the conclusion of Lies of P to relay the events to a colleague. He observes that Pinocchio may possess one of the keys to immortality, and expresses his intention to continue the search for another key known as Dorothy. To ensure clarity, the narrative presents a scene featuring a girl adorned in red shoes on a rooftop, clicking her heels three times. This, along with the defunct Stargazer's color reminiscent of the Emerald City, indicates that Lies of P has shifted its focus to L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
If a direct sequel to Lies of P were to be developed, it is highly probable that it would take place in the realm of Oz. Although modified to convey a darker and action-packed setting, Lies of P deviates from its Pinocchio source material. For the first game's DLC, the opportunity arises to explain how Dorothy, who appears to be in the city of Krat instead of Kansas, embarks on her own future adventure. Thankfully, Lies of P's universe accommodates additional games featuring an abundance of artificial and supernatural horrors, with few locations more suitable for such encounters than the land of Oz.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Could Become A Great Soulslike
When it comes to classic fairy tale Soulslikes, there are few settings that fit better than Oz. The search for the capital of an extraordinary and dangerous fantasy kingdom is typical in Souls games, and Dorothy, the main character, has the perfect co-op team to help her find the Emerald City - the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. In later novels, it is established that nothing truly dies in Oz, which explains the player's ability to come back to life, but this is offset by frequent forced transformations. A dark Wizard of Oz game could draw inspiration from these elements and create all the Soulslike areas and bosses it needs, and there is so much more to explore.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz also aligns well with the world of Lies of P. Characters like the Tin Man and the Wheelers would fit right into the darker and automaton-focused setting, and Oz itself could be portrayed as a land distorted by alchemy. Furthermore, the iconic Yellow Brick Road from the Wizard of Oz tale could provide justification for a linear, chapter-based progression like in Lies of P. The concept of already possessing what one desires could be integrated into the game's progression, with Courage, Brains, and Heart serving as counterparts to Lies of P's main stats. The possibilities for a Wizard of Oz Soulslike game are endless and could make for an exciting sequel when the time comes for Lies of P to conclude.
Lies of P is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
