Summary
The Doctor's first companion advises Millie Gibson, the latest companion, to do lots of running exercises and be ready for anything in the upcoming Doctor Who series.
As the 60th anniversary celebrations approach, Carole Ann Ford, the actress who portrayed Susan Foreman, shares her advice with Gibson. Ford advises Gibson to be ready for the role's unpredictable nature and the diverse range of tasks she might be required to undertake in every script.
The inaugural companion in Doctor Who's history has some guidance for Ncuti Gatwa's upcoming companion. Since 1963, the Doctor has been embarking on journeys through time and space with humans, Time Lords, and various other extraterrestrial beings. Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford), the Doctor's granddaughter, was the first significant partner to join him on his escapades. From then on, the Doctor has always had a companion by their side.
As the 60th anniversary celebrations approach, Ford reflects on her time with Doctor Who to support the next generation of actors. In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Ford imparts a few words of advice to Millie Gibson, the actress assuming the role of the Doctor's future companion. Before Gibson makes her official debut as Ruby Sunday, Ford encourages her to be prepared to run. Referencing her quote below:
Who Is Ruby Sunday?
: Engage in regular running workouts! I am uncertain if this advice still holds true at present, but you must undoubtedly be prepared for anything. The demands of each script can be unpredictable, leaving you uncertain about the tasks that may be assigned to you.Prior to Ruby Sunday assuming a prominent role in Season 14 of Doctor Who, it is essential to familiarize oneself with her character. Although the trio of 60th Anniversary specials will primarily revolve around the Fourteenth Doctor, played by David Tennant, alongside his companions Rose and Donna Noble, Ncuti Gatwa will also be enlisting a companion of his own.
Not much is known about the Doctor's newest travel partner, Ruby, except that she will be one of the youngest companions. When she accepted the role, Gibson was only 18 years old and had to leave her four-year stint on Coronation Street. Showrunner Russel T Davies has hinted that they will incorporate some action-packed elements from Coronation Street, which is not unusual for a companion.
As Doctor Who season 14 approaches, more information is likely to be revealed. The season is expected to air in late 2024, but the upcoming 60th Anniversary specials may provide some insight into Gatwa's Doctor's future. Along the journey, we will learn more about Ruby and her role in the Doctor's life. In any case, Doctor Who is sure to keep Gibson on her toes, just as Ford promised.
