The Ahsoka series continues to captivate Star Wars fans with each new episode. Not only did they witness the long-awaited reunion of beloved Star Wars: Rebels characters, but they were also introduced to the enigmatic Thrawn in another galaxy. As if that weren't enough, they were shocked to discover that Ezra is alive and well. And now, the fandom has been enlightened about Peridea, the ancestral home of the Nightsisters of Dathomir.
Interestingly, both the Nightsisters and Thrawn appear to be desiring a departure from the planet and the galaxy. On the other hand, Baylan Skoll is compelled to explore the very place that is drawing him in. Strangely enough, these two motives align, indicating a connection between them. However, the nature of this invisible force remains unknown. It is highly unlikely that Thrawn and the Great Mothers simply crave to reclaim what was lost by the Galactic Empire. So, what is causing their apprehension?
Who Are the Nightsisters?
Star Wars enthusiasts are familiar with Dathomir, a planet known as the home of the Nightsisters in a galaxy far, far away. However, in an even more distant galaxy, the Ahsoka series introduces fans to Peridea, a planet that houses a trio of Nightsisters referred to as the "Great Mothers" by Thrawn. These Nightsisters possess a unique ability to utilize a form of the Force that can be likened to magic. By tapping into the Dark Side, they are able to summon a green mist that represents this power. The Dark Side provides them with a gateway to numerous abilities that some may consider unnatural.
The presence of the Nightsisters was initially revealed in the third season of The Clone Wars, where fans discovered that they had connections with several notable characters. Darth Sidious frequently collaborated with the Nightsisters, even prior to the Clone Wars, seeking an apprentice from their ranks. These witches granted a young Zabrak boy special enhancements and handed him over to Darth Sidious, who trained him to become the formidable Darth Maul. Asajj Ventress, a Dathomirian warrior, also hailed from Dathomir. She revisited her home planet during the events of The Clone Wars, where the Nightsisters performed a magical ceremony that baptized her and granted her a place among them.
What Are the Nightsisters Running From?
Regrettably, Darth Sidious decided that Dathomir had become obsolete during the Clone Wars and therefore commanded the eradication of the Nightsisters. Only a small number of survivors remain, namely Morgan Elsbeth and Merrin. Merrin can be found in the Jedi series of games featuring Jedi Knight Cal Kestis. As for Ventress, her whereabouts in the galaxy remain uncertain.
The Star Wars fandom is filled with various theories speculating on the reasons behind the Night Sisters' flight. Curiously, these are the very reasons that Baylan Skoll asserts are beckoning to him. What could possibly be the allure that captivates them all?
Yuuzhan Vong
One prevalent theory suggests that the galaxy housing Peridea might be the very abode of the Yuuzhan Vong, a menacing alien species hailing from the Unknown Region in Star Wars Legends. Their unique trait of being immune to most Force abilities turned them into a formidable adversary for the fledgling Jedi Order. An overwhelming desire exists among enthusiasts to see their assimilation into the current Star Wars canon, and if there's a showrunner capable of achieving this feat with utmost success, it undeniably would be Dave Filoni. Although it is logical for the Nightsisters to escape from the Yuuzhan Vong given that their sorcery would have had no impact on them, it remains inexplicable why this terrifying extraterrestrial force would attract Baylan Skoll towards them.
Bendu
There is a possibility that Dave Filoni might reintroduce the neutral Bendu character from Star Wars: Rebels. Bendu, a powerful force-sensitive creature, resided on the planet Attolon, where he was discovered by Kanan Jarrus. Acting as a spiritual guide, Bendu assisted Kanan and Ezra in their individual struggles, not restricted to only the Light or Dark Side of the Force. He claimed to embody a balance known as "the middle." In Bendu's last appearance, he faded away after enduring a successful counter-attack and facing Thrawn's attempt to deliver a fatal blow.
Bendu's laughter reverberates through the air, serving as a haunting reminder of his resilience. It is highly probable that Bendu is the enigmatic figure who beckons Baylan and instills terror in the hearts of the Nightsisters. Even Thrawn, renowned for his strategic prowess, harbors a deep sense of trepidation towards Bendu, courtesy of their initial encounter. The colossal being effortlessly decimated Thrawn's ground troops with a merciless barrage of lightning strikes. Remarkably, Bendu asserts his disinterest in insignificant clashes, yet there exists a lingering animosity between him and Thrawn, awaiting resolution.
Abeloth
The most popular theory among fans is that Abeloth, a character from the old Extended Universe of Star Wars, could potentially transition to the canon side. This opportunity arose with the introduction of the Mortis gods in The Clone Wars. Although Abeloth did not appear in the Mortis episodes, she was depicted as the Mother who maintained harmony between the Daughter and Son. Unlike the other gods, the Mother was mortal and desired immortality. Eventually, she consumed from the Font of Power and bathed in the Pool of Knowledge, which unexpectedly corrupted her and sparked conflict with the Son and the Daughter. Ahsoka's connection to the Daughter makes her the ideal candidate to bring Abeloth into the current continuity. Additionally, the Mortis trilogy continues to have significance in Filoni's projects. Notably, Rebels showcased a mural of the Father, Son, and Daughter in the Lothal Jedi temple, and Ahsoka encountered a similar one at the start of her series.
