Star Wars Outlaws will transport players on an exciting sci-fi adventure set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In this time frame, popular characters like Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa could make appearances. Although the main story will revolve around the new protagonist, Kay Vess, fans may have the chance to fight alongside and interact with beloved characters. While it is logical for Star Wars Outlaws to feature these pre-established characters, it is not necessary. Some fans may prefer the opportunity to explore fresh and original characters instead. While their inclusion would not likely detract from the game, Ubisoft should handle these characters with caution and may consider omitting them altogether if feasible.
Star Wars Outlaws Should Forge Its Own Path
Star Wars Outlaws takes place during a time of desperation for the rebellion. Luke Skywalker has suffered a brutal defeat at the hands of Darth Vader, Han Solo has been captured and sold to the Hutts after being encased in carbonite, and the rebels are on the run. The Galactic Empire seems unstoppable, poised to dominate the entire galaxy. However, this is where the story of Star Wars Outlaws begins, caught between the events of the two films, with Kay Vess trapped under the oppressive rule of the Empire throughout her journey.
Although Kay Vess is a new and original character, there is a possibility that she will cross paths with some beloved characters from the Star Wars universe. As she travels through various planets, she may encounter iconic locations and might even lend her assistance to well-known characters on their own quests. The reveal trailer already provides a glimpse of what appears to be Han Solo frozen in carbonite, suggesting the potential for Vess to aid Leia in discovering his whereabouts. Alternatively, it could simply be a fun reference for fans to appreciate while enjoying the story.
Even if Kay Vess never crosses paths with Han, her story will still be teeming with Easter eggs and iconic characters. While this may delight die-hard fans of the series, it could also seem a bit excessive. The Star Wars franchise has thoroughly explored these characters and settings, making it difficult for the franchise to evolve beyond them. Luke has appeared in six films and numerous TV shows, Leia has graced the screen in seven films plus the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and Han received his own standalone prequel in addition to his five previous appearances. And let's not forget their numerous appearances in video games over the years.
To keep the Star Wars universe feeling fresh, Ubisoft must prioritize original characters over those that have already been established. The galaxy shouldn't feel so small that the same characters appear in every corner of it. Introducing new characters injects new life into the franchise, allowing the studio to weave new stories featuring personalities unrestricted by the past. By introducing original characters, fans are given an opportunity to experience this beloved sci-fi world through a fresh lens. The gameplay trailer already showcased a plethora of unique characters, and it is our hope that this is just a glimpse of what Ubisoft has in store.
When it comes to incorporating pre-established characters in Star Wars Outlaws, Respawn's approach in the Star Wars Jedi series sets a great example. In both games, Darth Vader's significant presence was acknowledged, but his appearances were kept brief and true to the lore, serving a pivotal role. Similarly, Saw Gerrera's cameo was not overpowering, allowing the spotlight to remain on the original characters and their personal journey, resulting in a captivating adventure within the vast Star Wars universe.
Scheduled for release in 2024, Star Wars Outlaws will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
