Squid Game: Contestant 287, known as Mai Whelan, has shared her experiences on the Netflix show, and it seems like her time on the competition was just as intense as watching it, with Mai stating "every day was filled with fear."
Although other players initially took the spotlight, Mai became a prominent contestant in the later episodes of Squid Game. Not only was she adept at forming alliances with her fellow players, but she also took a ruthless approach to the game.
In Episode 6, Mai was seen speaking negatively about TJ, Player 182, due to her lack of trust in him. Despite this, TJ ultimately chose to save Mai during the allegiance test and also granted her the last and most advantageous position for the Glass Bridge game, ensuring her spot in the finale.

Squid Game’s Mai says “every day was fear” in The Challenge
Squid Game: The Challenge’s finale, released this week, at last unveiled Mai, Player 287, as the victor of the $4.56 million. In a recent interview with Netflix’s Tudum, she discussed the difficulties of the competition, stating: “Every day was filled with fear for me.”
"It was a relief to return to my regular routine and not have to stress about being eliminated. After two and a half weeks of non-stop action and emotional highs and lows, I really needed that. But the person who entered the competition is still me. I'm still Mai, and she hasn't changed - except that I've emerged even stronger."
Mai struggled with the constant questioning of who to trust, a common experience for every surviving player in the games. This was made even more difficult by the tests that relied on chance or alliances.
"I lived in constant fear every day - fear of being eliminated or fear of being targeted. It was a fear that consumed me from within," she explained.
"One day, you feel happy and social with everyone, and the next day it's like, 'I'm not sure if I can trust that person.' It was incredibly challenging to defend yourself and navigate the different personalities you encountered. Every moment of every day was spent waiting to either be eliminated or move on to the next stage of the game."

Mai is proud of her victory and the empowering message it sends to viewers at home. "People may not believe it was me, but I am proud to be a woman, a minority, and to have overcome obstacles at my age," she declares. "I want to encourage others to be themselves and persevere."
