Florence Pugh is determined to free Hollywood from its preoccupation with "superficiality." In a recent interview with Radio Times, the 27-year-old actress revealed her ongoing battle to maintain control over her public image. This is precisely why she boldly debuted her completely shaved head in May.
“I intentionally adopted that appearance,” she stated to the news outlet. “I aimed to eliminate vanity from the equation. Hollywood is highly glamorous, particularly for women, and it can be challenging for the audience to see beyond that.” Pugh clarified that whenever she has the chance to forgo "looking glamorous or wearing a full face of makeup," she strives to maintain that approach.
“It benefits the audience,” Pugh added. “Vanity is removed. In such instances, all people can focus on is your natural face. Even at the beginning of my career, I was constantly struggling to manage my public image. ... It enhances my performances when I wear minimal makeup because it allows me to showcase less of a shimmering presence on screen. I feel empowered to make unattractive expressions, as if it's more acceptable.”
At the Met Gala on May 1, Pugh revealed that she happily cut off her locks for her latest film, We Live in Time. "It's truly incredible... I couldn't think of a better way to debut this new hairstyle than at the Met. I've been keeping it a secret for the past three weeks, and it just makes everything perfect." Pugh complemented the haircut with a stunning plunging white Valentino gown.
The actress's look perfectly embodied the theme of "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" with its dark bow at the center, paying homage to the late designer's fondness for the accessory. Just days before the grandest night in fashion, she was named as Valentino's latest brand ambassador.
Pugh's dedication to individuality goes beyond her performances in film. When it comes to fashion, she follows her own unique style, which ultimately led to her collaboration with Valentino.
In July 2022, Pugh garnered significant attention for her appearance at the fashion house's Haute Couture fashion show. Commanding the spotlight, she confidently donned a striking hot pink gown that fearlessly revealed her nipples. Although this daring ensemble faced considerable criticism, Pugh swiftly silenced the negativity with her unyielding resolve.
"I was fully aware that wearing this stunning Valentino dress would invite commentary, be it positive or negative. We understood the significance and were prepared for it," Pugh expressed on Instagram, alongside her red carpet images. "I was thrilled to don this dress, and there was no nerve or apprehension present in me at any point, neither before, during, nor after."
Valentino's creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, shared with The New York Times that he was captivated by Pugh's unwavering response to the critical comments.
"The statement perfectly encapsulated the concept I had discussed months ago, emphasizing the absence of beauty standards and celebrating individuality, diversity, and self-expression in a bold manner," Piccioli expressed to the newspaper. "Florence simply sought acknowledgment and understanding for a personal decision, which aligns precisely with the message conveyed through my collection."
