In episode 5 of The Apothecary Diaries anime, the focus is mainly on the Garden Party event held at the Imperial Palace. However, the episode starts by introducing the curse plot point that was hinted at in episode 4. Maomao has an encounter with a specific Eunuch, who later approaches her with a request to create a medicine to cure a curse.
The Eunuch proceeds to explain how he developed an unusual rash after burning firewood that had various colors. Maomao attentively listens to his description and subsequently demonstrates that the rash is a normal reaction to coming into contact with lacquer-covered wood.
In the anime, Maomao and Jinshi are depicted. The remainder of the episode centers around Lady Gyokuyou's maids' endeavors to ready Maomao for the Garden Party. Among them, one maid restrains Maomao and applies makeup to conceal her freckles. However, it is eventually revealed that the freckles themselves were a deliberate cosmetic choice made by Maomao to avoid attracting attention in Hanamachi. The episode concludes after introducing four of the Emperor's most influential concubines.
