Foxy's arm spontaneously combusted during filming of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, but thankfully it was quickly put out and replaced.
Using practical effects for the animatronics not only instilled genuine fear in the cast but also added an authentic '80s and '90s touch to the film. Despite the challenges, the creators managed to recreate the animatronics from the games, proving that practical effects can still make a significant impact in today's CGI-dominated industry.
One of the animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy's almost caused an accident on the set, but thankfully it was not as severe as the infamous '87 bite incident. The movie adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy's, created by Blumhouse, has been in development since 2015 and has faced numerous challenges, including the departure of director Chris Columbus. Despite these hurdles, the film persevered and surprised fans by using practical effects instead of CGI for the animatronics. However, this choice did not come without its own set of repercussions.
In an interview with IGN, Emma Tammi, the director of Five Nights at Freddy's, shared an interesting incident that occurred during filming. Tammi revealed that Foxy's arm unexpectedly caught fire. When asked about any technical difficulties experienced while working with the animatronics of Five Nights at Freddy's, Tammi replied, "We were in the middle of shooting when I heard someone calmly whisper, 'Foxy's arm is on fire.'" She went on to explain that one of the servos had been running for an extended period, causing it to overheat and emit smoke. "Without panicking, everyone walked away while we quickly put out the fire and replaced the arm," Tammi recounted. She mentioned that while such occurrences were normal and occasionally happened, this was the only instance it took place on set.
During the interview, Tammi also discussed the significance of using animatronics on set. She emphasized that having physically frightening animatronics for Five Nights at Freddy's added a chilling element to the film, even when they were not in use. Tammi explained that using practical effects allowed the actors to interact with the animatronics in real-time, which was essential given that the film is set in the 2000s but flashes back to the '80s and '90s. This decision was made to pay homage to the movie-making techniques of those eras, as it was particularly important to Scott and herself.
Fans of the Five Nights at Freddy's games will amusingly note that Foxy, out of all the animatronics, experienced malfunctions. In the first game, Foxy is found in Pirate Cove with an "out of order" sign, indicating that he is undergoing repairs. Furthermore, Foxy's character faces destruction in the fire at Fazbear's Fright in Five Nights at Freddy's 3.
The creators of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie astoundingly managed to flawlessly replicate the animatronics from the games using practical effects. Numerous movie enthusiasts believe that the excessive use of CGI in modern times results in a certain loss, and that practical effects are essential. Nevertheless, CGI does serve the purpose of minimizing incidents of objects catching fire during filming.
The release date for Five Nights at Freddy's in cinemas is set for October 27, 2023.
