Tara Lipinski and her husband, Todd Kapostasy, became parents with the arrival of their first baby via surrogate.
Lipinski, 41, expressed her long-held dream come true to People following the birth of her daughter, Georgie. She described the experience of adjusting to newborn life as the most exhaustion she has ever experienced but also the most rewarding. Lipinski also shared her overwhelming relief and joyful sentiments, highlighting her baby girl's serene and tranquil nature.
The Olympian shared their pregnancy news on Instagram at the beginning of this month. They mentioned that after getting the results of their immune testing, they chose to use one of their own biological embryos and have it carried by a surrogate. With gratitude, they found Mikayla, the perfect surrogate, and recently received a positive pregnancy test.
Lipinski previously disclosed that she and Kapostasy had been attempting to conceive for five years.
In August, she shared via Instagram the extensive challenges she and her husband faced since starting the process in 2018. She underwent anesthesia 24 times, experienced 4 miscarriages and 4 D&C's, had 6 unsuccessful IVF transfers, went through 8 retrievals, and received a diagnosis of endometriosis which led to 2 major surgeries. The journey has been filled with immense pain and the process of grieving over their losses has been difficult. Despite being fortunate enough to create embryos, achieving pregnancy has proven to be another obstacle. In response to their experiences, Lipinski and Kapostasy launched a podcast called "Tara Lipinski: Unexpecting" to discuss their IVF journey, pregnancy losses, and the challenges of infertility.
"I believe that dealing with infertility can be an incredibly isolating experience, and my intention in sharing my personal story is to offer support to other couples who may be going through similar journeys. My hope is that by sharing, we can help them feel less alone. I'm grateful to have you all joining me on this ride." In a recent podcast episode, Lipinski became emotional as she opened up about the devastating impact of her first miscarriage, describing it as heart-wrenching, but it was her fourth miscarriage that truly shattered her."
She tearfully remembered, "I had invested all my money in this and it vanished, leaving me feeling helpless." "My body simply refused to cooperate. I desired it with such intensity... This one was particularly challenging. I truly believed it would be the perfect one."
Lipinski, a figure skater, and Kapostasy, a sports producer, crossed paths at the 2015 Sports Emmys ceremony where she bestowed him with an award. Their romantic journey spanned two years, culminating in their marriage in June 2017.
As for her athletic career, Lipinski won an Olympic gold medal for figure skating in 1998. Since retiring from the sport in 2002, she has transitioned into working as a commentator.
