Tara Lipinski, the Olympic ice skater, is expecting her first baby through a surrogate after facing fertility challenges for several years. Lipinski, who is 41 years old, announced this exciting news on Tuesday, October 3. She further discussed the process with her husband and cohost, Todd Kapostasy, on the Thursday, October 5, episode of their podcast "Unexpecting".
In Episode 12, we made significant progress. Following our immune testing results, we chose to transfer one of our biological, genetic embryos to a surrogate. On Tuesday, Lipinski informed her followers on Instagram that they found a surrogate named Mikayla, whom they believe was a perfect match. Furthermore, they received a positive pregnancy test result.
The next day, Lipinski provided her Instagram audience with more details about her connection with the surrogate. She shared heartwarming text message conversations that highlighted their journey.
Meeting Mikayla and beginning the surrogacy process brought unexpected emotions for me. We immediately felt a deep connection and bond, like two peas in a pod. I shared screenshots of this on Wednesday, October 4, captioning them with these feelings. During their podcast episode on Thursday, Lipinski and Kapostasy reminisced about the moment when their doctor called them on FaceTime to confirm the baby's heartbeat.

"It felt incredibly surreal. We couldn't believe that something like this was happening to us. This kind of news never comes our way. It was almost impossible to believe," Lipinski revealed. "I found myself crying uncontrollably. It was a messy, teary outpouring of all the trauma we've endured throughout the years."
Kapostasy, on the other hand, recalled that as his wife was crying her heart out, he was ecstatically roaming around our kitchen island. "I was celebrating like a football player after scoring a touchdown. I was going crazy with happiness," he exclaimed.
Lipinski and Kapostasy had a significant reason to rejoice as they had launched their podcast, "Unexpecting," with the intention of supporting couples who face challenges with infertility. In the recently released podcast trailer, Lipinski openly shared their emotionally challenging fertility experience.
"In the span of the last five years, I have encountered anesthesia on 24 occasions. Along this difficult path, I have experienced the heartache of four miscarriages, faced disappointment with six unsuccessful IVF transfers, gone through eight retrievals, and undergone two major surgeries due to a diagnosis of endometriosis," expressed the gold medalist, his voice accompanied by poignant moments captured in home videos.
"The sheer number of failures, the magnitude of the losses, and the various obstacles encountered were beyond anything I could have anticipated. It almost seemed like a cruel twist of fate," he reminisced. "By sharing our story, our hope is to assure other couples navigating a similar journey that they are not alone in their struggles."
