Ed Boon recently revealed his desired Mortal Kombat characters to be included in a future Super Smash Bros. game. While Super Smash Bros. initially focused on Nintendo's iconic mascots, it has since embraced characters from various gaming companies, becoming a celebration of the gaming industry. Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid were the first non-Nintendo characters to join in 2007's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and subsequent installments welcomed appearances from Banjo-Kazooie, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy 7, Tekken, and even Kingdom Hearts.
Fans have actively shared their own suggestions for classic video game characters to join the expanding roster of beloved mascots in Super Smash Bros. Crash Bandicoot is a popular choice, but other unlikely suggestions include Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes, Master Chief from Halo, and even Dante from Devil May Cry. While these characters may seem too violent for Nintendo's typically family-friendly content, the inclusion of Bayonetta in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U proves that all possibilities are considered when selecting new fighters for the game.
Enter Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and creative director of NetherRealm Studios. In a recent interview with Axios, Boon expressed his openness to a potential crossover between Mortal Kombat and Super Smash Bros, although he confirmed that Nintendo has not approached him about it yet. When asked about his preferred MK fighters to join the Smash roster, Boon immediately mentioned Scorpion and Sub-Zero. He believes that these iconic rival ninjas would be visually recognizable and even expressed his desire to see Scorpion execute his signature spear move in Super Smash Bros.
In the past, Boon expressed his desire to have Scorpion appear in Super Smash Bros., which should come as no surprise to devoted Mortal Kombat fans. Scorpion is widely recognized as the face of the MK franchise, and Boon repeatedly stated that the undead ninja assassin is his personal favorite character. Following closely behind is Sub-Zero, the ice-wielding warrior from the Lin Kuei clan, who shares a long-standing rivalry with Scorpion dating back to the original Mortal Kombat game. Both ninjas have made appearances in other games, including NetherRealm's Injustice series.
The upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 will introduce a new chapter in the legendary feud between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as they become allies in Liu Kang's rebooted timeline. However, if Nintendo were to offer Ed Boon the opportunity to feature Mortal Kombat characters in Super Smash Bros., players could witness these iconic ninja warriors engaging in battles against other beloved gaming mascots, presumably in a less violent format than they are accustomed to.
