Nintendo's June 2023 Direct surprised many with the announcement of a remake for the SNES classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Despite its absence from the Nintendo Switch Online SNES library, the retro classic is receiving a total makeover that stays true to the original sprites. Set to be released during the holiday season of 2023, the Super Mario RPG remake is eagerly anticipated by fans who have felt overlooked for some time. While Paper Mario: The Origami King provided entertainment, it didn't capture the traditional RPG gameplay and worldbuilding that Mario RPG fans craved. With the Mario & Luigi series developer no longer in operation, it seemed like there was no future for the older RPG titles and their diverse Mario characters. Thankfully, the Super Mario RPG remake offers a glimmer of hope, reintroducing beloved characters like Boshi, Booster, and Mallow. Super Mario RPG's Geno, a highly requested character by the Smash community, was not included in the playable roster. Instead, Geno was given a Mii Fighter outfit, which disappointed many fans who felt it was a lack of respect for the character.
