Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, recently teased fans with a cryptic message hinting at the return of old characters in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. The franchise's latest installment, which was revealed in May through a stunning CGI trailer, is set to reboot the series after the events of Mortal Kombat 11. It features Fire God Liu Kang, who creates a new world of peace only to have it threatened by the return of Shang Tsung. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of beloved characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Princess Kitana, and Mileena, who were confirmed in last month's MK 1 teaser. Johnny Cage, a Mortal Kombat staple, will also make an appearance with an alternate character skin modeled after the famous action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. With a new gameplay trailer expected to be released during this week's Summer Game Fest, the anticipation for Mortal Kombat 1 continues to grow, leaving room for even more past Kombatants to emerge.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, has sent social media into a frenzy with his latest mysterious Twitter post. Boon shared the character selection screen from 1997’s Mortal Kombat 4 along with a cryptic message that hinted at the return of some of the characters. Fans have been speculating about which members of the MK 4 roster could be making a comeback. With the presence of a dragon emoji, some believe that Reptile, the lizard-like ninja, could be making his return after being absent from MK 11. Others think that Reiko, the loyal general of Shao Khan who was believed to be the Outworld tyrant reborn, is being teased for MK 1. Meanwhile, some fans believe that the brutish member of the Black Dragon clan, Jarek, could be a sign that the villainous Kano is back.

Ed Boon's recent social media posts related to Mortal Kombat have fueled fan speculation about who will return in the rebooted world of the game. While the gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest may provide some answers, players are currently left to guess which fighters from MK 4 will make an appearance in the upcoming Mortal Kombat installment. Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to release on September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
