Sheffield Wednesday have made the decision for manager Darren Moore to depart from the club by mutual agreement, just three weeks after guiding them to promotion to the Championship. Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri expressed that both parties agreed that it was the appropriate moment for Moore to part ways with the club, even though they achieved success in their return to the second tier following two seasons in League One.
Moore's Owls team accumulated an impressive 96 points in League One during the previous season. However, they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion to Ipswich and Plymouth, who managed to gather 98 and 101 points respectively.
Despite this setback, the team showcased an extraordinary comeback during the play-offs. In their semi-final first leg against Peterborough, they were trailing by a staggering 4-0. Nevertheless, they displayed exceptional resilience and determination, managing to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the final at Wembley.
Their remarkable journey culminated in a thrilling victory against Barnsley, with the decisive goal being scored in extra time on May 29.
Chairman Dejphon Chansiri stated on the club website that the decision has been made to part ways with manager Darren Moore and his backroom staff. This marks the sixth managerial change for the club in under five years.
I deeply appreciate the unwavering dedication and commitment that Darren has shown to our club throughout his unique journey with Sheffield Wednesday. In the football industry, all journeys eventually come to an end, and we both concur that now is the appropriate time for this chapter to conclude. The level of mutual respect we share, both on a personal and professional level, is truly remarkable. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Darren for his invaluable contributions.
"Darren will always be welcome at Hillsborough."
'Nobody saw this coming'
We News' Tim Thornton:"In a surprising turn of events, no one could have predicted or anticipated what was about to unfold. Darren Moore received significant praise for their promotion, particularly due to Sheff Wed's exceptional season. In any other year, accumulating 96 points would have secured their promotion.
During the playoffs, captain Barry Bannan credited Darren Moore for orchestrating their extraordinary comeback. The dramatic climax occurred when Josh Windass scored the winning goal in the last minute at Wembley."
This situation puts Sheffield Wednesday in a challenging position.
