Stephen A. Smith is known for sparking discussion, but he's not buying into the idea that Caitlin Clark's success is solely because of her race. In an interview with We, the cohost of ESPN's First Take and star of ESPN+ docuseries Up for Debate, Smith, 56, challenged the belief that 22-year-old Clark's popularity is linked to her race.
Smith emphasized the need for societal maturity, acknowledging that race is a significant factor that should not be overlooked. However, he pointed out that race does not always have to be a negative aspect. He used Caitlin Clark as an example, noting that despite her being white, she is receiving a level of attention that previous Black players did not receive, highlighting an issue within society.
Following Clark's debut in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever on May 14, Jemele Hill, a former ESPN anchor, expressed concerns about the role of Clark's race in her popularity. Hill mentioned to the Los Angeles Times that the excessive fanfare surrounding Clark was "a little problematic," suggesting that her race may have influenced her level of attention.
Sunny Hostin from The View expressed her thoughts on Wednesday, May 22, mentioning Clark's "white privilege."
On the other hand, Smith believed that the media has effectively highlighted Clark's significant influence on women's basketball.

"The media follows interesting stories," Smith explained. "Caitlin Clark has become a standout story. She is a talented basketball player, a great person, comes from a strong family background, and has marketable qualities."
Smith also commended Clark for speaking out against the inequalities in the WNBA.
In the new docuseries Up for Debate, which delves into the history, current state, and future of sports debates, Smith talks about how he uses his platform to advocate for change. He recalls a recent incident where he spoke up about the lack of charter flights for female athletes, and within two days, they were provided with the flights they had been requesting for 22 years. Smith emphasizes the importance of being conscientious and having a good heart in making positive changes.
Smith also addresses his reputation for fiery commentary in the docuseries, explaining that it doesn't always reflect who he truly is when the cameras are off. He opens up about why he expresses himself passionately during debates and how it can sometimes be misunderstood. The series offers viewers a glimpse into the complexities of his personality and the motivations behind his strong opinions.
Smith shared, "I don’t want to make enemies. Just between us, I want you to know that I’m not a bad person. In reality, I consider myself a kind individual with many friends and loved ones."
However, Smith admitted, "I don’t waste time pretending to be someone I’m not. I've always been authentic and honest. I knew I would stay true to myself in this industry, and I will continue to do so."
All three episodes of Up for Debate are available to stream now on ESPN+.
