Stan Wawrinka Triumphs Over Andy Murray in Emotional French Open Encounter

Stan Wawrinka delivered a standout performance, describing it as his "best match of the year," as he defeated Andy Murray 6-4 6-4 6-2 in the opening round of the French Open.

Although Wawrinka and Murray have engaged in thrilling matches in the past, this encounter was largely one-sided. Murray, currently ranked world No. 75, has struggled in 2024, losing nine out of the 14 matches he has played so far.

The 37-year-old Murray and Wawrinka, who are both three-time grand slam champions, met at the net after the match. They embraced, smiled, and chatted for around 20 seconds before shaking hands with the umpire.

“It was emotional, for sure,” said the 39-year-old Wawrinka. “We’re getting closer to the end and we played against each other so many times over the past 20 years."

It was an incredible experience to be at the Chatrier night session, something I had never done before. The player I faced is truly amazing, both on and off the court. We have a great deal of respect for each other.

Reflecting on the match, Wawrinka, the 2017 French Open champion, expressed, "I believe that was my best performance this year. I felt strong, my movement was on point, and I was playing with aggression. The playing conditions suited me well, and I am ecstatic about my performance and my level of play. This is a significant positive for me."

Murray, who is playing in his first French Open since losing in the first round to Wawrinka in 2020, faced an early break of serve in each set and couldn't make a comeback.

The Scottish player, who reached the final in Paris in 2016, has most probably competed in his final singles match at Roland Garros after announcing earlier this year that this season would likely be his last on the tour.

Murray had been dealing with an ankle injury since the Miami Open in March. Despite opting out of surgery, his training was affected by limited playing time.

“It was expected to be a challenging match,” Murray commented according to the BBC. “Stan has consistently shown great tennis skills on that court.”

I thought he would play really well, and he did. He didn't give me many chances. I wish I could have performed a bit better.

Now, Wawrinka moves on to the second round. Murray will focus on the men's doubles with his partner, Dan Evans.
